The verdict

Choose Geneva if you are travelling with children or want to sightsee on foot: many more attractions and park space near the centre, and more notable places within walking distance of it.

Choose Nice if the sea is the point: 70 beaches nearby, water at 21°C or more through the summer, and winter daytime highs around 13°C.

Where they differ

Geneva puts the family day out first: many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, and about three times as much park space as Nice. Against that, it has no month of water warm enough to swim in.

Nice answers with the coast: 70 beaches nearby against Geneva's 43, and sea at 21°C or more from June to September. On price, the national daily estimate for France, €160, sits below Switzerland's €248, though both are country-level figures rather than city ones.

Where they are alike

Eating out is close to a draw. Nice has somewhat more restaurants near the centre, Geneva a somewhat wider range of kitchens; either way you can decide where to eat on the day.

Day trips are comparable too: 27% of the land around Geneva is protected and 24% around Nice, and each has 2 UNESCO-listed places within reach. Museums and nights out are modest in both, with the drinking and the clubs concentrated near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

Families with young children are better served in Geneva: many more tourist attractions near the centre and far more park space, which keeps days short and walkable. Nice does have 3 theme parks within reach against Geneva's 2.

Anyone whose holiday is built around swimming should take Nice. It has 70 beaches nearby and sea at 21°C or more through the summer, where Geneva offers no warm-water season at all.

Museum-goers and people who want a drink after dark will do better in Geneva, which has somewhat more museums, more places to drink and about twice as many nightclubs as Nice, most of them near the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €248 against €160, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of Geneva or Nice. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than the two countries sit from each other, so treat the gap as background, not as what your week will cost.

Nice's warmth reads well across the whole year, but the swimmable sea and the driest weeks are the same short summer window, which is also when the beaches are fullest. Just after it, October and November are the wettest months, at 124-138mm.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Geneva: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (5.7 km from centre). Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Geneva's good window is narrow. June to August brings daytime highs of 24-27°C, but the rain does not step aside for it: 77-81mm falls across those months, much as it does in spring, so a warm week here is not reliably a dry one.

Nice peaks in July and August, 28°C by day and sea at 24-25°C, with only 13-18mm of rain. Its shoulder months work too, 21°C in May and October. Autumn is the catch: 124-138mm falls in October and November.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
