The verdict

Choose Genoa if you want to swim: 37 beaches within reach and sea at 21°C or more through the late summer, plus the more walkable core and the drier mid-summer.

Choose Turin if the trip is about eating, museums and going out. It has far more restaurants and bars near the centre, more museums, and more for children to do.

Where they differ

Genoa is the one with a coast: 37 beaches nearby against Turin's 1, and four months when the sea reaches 21°C or more. Its centre also fits somewhat more notable places into walking distance.

Turin has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, about twice as many places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs, though only about half of those sit near the centre. It also has more museums, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Genoa's one.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a strong base for getting out. Protected land is limited around both, 8% around Genoa and 6% around Turin, so day trips are the weaker part of either trip.

Both are also compact on foot, keeping much of what is worth seeing within walking distance of the centre, Genoa somewhat more so. Summer warmth is close as well, with August highs of 28°C in each, and autumn brings the heaviest rain to both.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone whose holiday is built around swimming should take Genoa. It has 37 beaches within reach against Turin's one, and four months of sea at 21°C or more, which Turin cannot offer at all.

Travellers who plan around dinner and what follows it want Turin: roughly twice the restaurants near the centre and a wider spread of kitchens, twice the drinking places and around three times the nightclubs.

Families lean to Turin as well, with about twice as many attractions and twice as much park space near the centre. Neither city has a theme park within reach, so plan around museums, parks and streets.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure here is a national price level, identical for both cities by construction, so the value comparison between Genoa and Turin carries no information. The €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either place, not evidence about either city.

The sunshine figure is missing for Turin, because no station near the city records it, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than poor. Turin's monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone, while Genoa's also draws on sunshine and sea temperature, so the two series are not built from the same ingredients.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

No sunshine record

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Genoa: 1991-2020 normals, Genova / Sestri (6.7 km from centre). Turin: 1991-2020 normals, Torino / Caselle (15.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Genoa is at its best in July and August, when the coast is both warmest and driest: highs of 27-28°C, sea at 24-25°C and only 12-20mm of rain. September still swims, though 72mm arrives with it and the settled weather goes.

Turin peaks across the same summer, 26-29°C, though it stays wetter at 57-83mm a month, so pack for showers whatever you plan. Autumn is heavier still, and winter highs of 7-9°C make it a season to skip.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
