The verdict

Choose Genoa if you want sea swimming and dependable summer warmth: it is the warmer city all year, with a dry high summer and beaches within reach of the centre.

Choose Zurich if the trip is built around restaurants, a wide spread of kitchens and late nights, with parks and protected countryside close by. Expect a cooler year, wetter summers and no swimming season at all.

Where they differ

Genoa is the warmer city through the year, with daytime highs of 12-28°C against Zurich's 4-24°C, and it has three months at 40mm of rain or less where Zurich has none. It also has the sea: more beaches nearby and water warm enough to swim in through the summer.

Zurich is the stronger city for eating and going out: more restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens and many more nightclubs. It also has more protected countryside around it, 16% of the land against Genoa's 8%.

Where they are alike

Museums and heritage come out level. Zurich has about twice as many museums, but Genoa's cluster more tightly around the centre, and each has 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach.

They also match on walkable sights, with a similar number of notable places near the centre, and on families and days out, though by different means: Genoa through attractions close to the centre, Zurich through park space, 2 theme parks and more protected countryside.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling to swim should pick Genoa. It has 37 beaches nearby and four months with water at 21°C or more, a season Zurich has no equivalent to in this data.

A traveller who plans days around eating and going out is better served in Zurich: more restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many nightclubs, all of it walkable.

Families split. Genoa has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre; Zurich has about twice the park space and 2 theme parks within reach, which suits younger children.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 for Italy and €248 for Switzerland, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit far above its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither number tells you what your week will cost.

Warm is not the same as dry. Zurich's best-rated months are also its wettest, at 119-128mm through summer, while Genoa's mild autumn carries 101-122mm in October and November. Genoa's beach advantage concentrates into July and August, the same weeks everyone else travels.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Genoa: 1991-2020 normals, Genova / Sestri (6.7 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Genoa's clearest window is July and August: highs of 27-28°C, sea at 24-25°C and only 12-20mm of rain. Late spring works too, warm enough to swim by June and drier than autumn.

Zurich is at its warmest in the same two months, at 24°C, but that is also when it rains hardest. September, at 19°C and 87mm, is the drier, calmer choice, and winter days near 4°C leave little reason to be outdoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
