The verdict
Choose Izmir if you want sea and evenings out: 4 beaches within reach, water warm enough to swim from late spring into autumn, and far more bars and clubs, most of them near the centre.
Choose Goreme if you want dry, settled summers, attractions clustered around a town of 2,000 people, and a UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach rather than museums in the city itself.

Where they differ
Goreme works on foot: many times more tourist attractions near its centre than Izmir has, 11% of the surrounding land protected against 4%, and 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach where Izmir has none. Its few restaurants span a wider range of kitchens.
Izmir brings the coast and the evening: 4 beaches nearby and 5 months of sea at 21°C or more, many times as many bars and nightclubs, most of them close to the centre, and far more notable places within walking distance, plus 2 theme parks.
Where they are alike
Neither is a nature destination first. Protected land is a modest share of the surroundings in both, and the day trips are things you travel out to rather than country starting at the edge of town.
Both are sunny, both have 5 months at 40mm of rain or less, and January is the coolest month in each. Both also feed you decently by different routes: Izmir on the number of restaurants near the centre, Goreme on range of kitchens.
Which traveller are you?
Sea-and-evenings traveller: Izmir. It has 4 beaches nearby, sea at 21°C or more for 5 months, and many times as many places to drink and dance, most of them close enough to the centre to walk between.
Families: Goreme, if the children will walk. Its tourist attractions cluster near the centre in a way Izmir's do not. Izmir counters with 2 theme parks, which Goreme cannot match.
Museums and eating out: Izmir, with many times as many museums, grouped tightly around the centre, and many more restaurants. Goreme answers with a wider spread of kitchens and 1 UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so the value comparison between these two carries no information about which is cheaper. The €100 daily budget beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of either place, and costs in a town of 2,000 people and a city of 4.5 million will not behave the same way.
Izmir's swimming strength rests on a warm-water window that closes outside the summer half of the year, and those months are also when heat peaks at 34°C. Goreme's driest, best-rated months are the same ones. Neither rating accounts for crowds.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Goreme: 1991-2020 normals, Nevsehir (10.2 km from centre). Izmir: 1991-2020 normals, Izmir (3.4 km from centre).
Goreme is at its best from July to September, with highs of 30°C in July and August, 25°C in September, and rainfall down to 7-15mm. Spring is wetter, 42-59mm a month, and January highs of 5°C rule out winter.
Izmir is the better pick in May, 27°C with 33mm, and again from September into October, when the sea still holds 23°C. July and August push 34°C, and the winter months bring 96-127mm, which is where the two most clearly part.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
