The verdict
Choose Goreme if you are coming for dry, hot summers on land, protected countryside and attractions spread around rather than stacked in one centre, and you have no interest in swimming.
Choose Paphos if you want beaches within reach, sea above 21°C for half the year, a walkable centre with more restaurants and bars, and a winter that stays mild.

Where they differ
Goreme's strengths are inland ones. 11% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Paphos, and it has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre. The national daily budget estimate for its country is €100, against €129 for Paphos's.
Paphos has 27 beaches where Goreme has none, and a sea warm enough to swim in for half the year. It runs warmer year-round, with daytime highs of 17-31°C against Goreme's 5-30°C, and far more notable places sit within walking distance of its centre.
Where they are alike
Neither is chiefly a base for day trips, and the two come out much the same there, though the land around Goreme is the more protected, at 11% against 2%.
Heritage and family appeal are modest in both. Goreme has somewhat more museums, Paphos 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Goreme's 1, and neither has a theme park. Both offer a similar range of kitchens, Paphos simply with more of them near the centre.
Which traveller are you?
A family after swimming: Paphos, with 27 beaches nearby and sea reaching 28°C in August. Goreme has no coast at all, though it does have more tourist attractions near its centre.
Anyone drawn to landscape and dry heat: Goreme. 11% of the surrounding land is protected against 2% around Paphos, and high-summer rain is close to nothing, so long days outdoors are reliable.
A short-break traveller on foot: Paphos, where far more notable places sit within walking distance and there are about three times as many restaurants near the centre, plus more bars and clubs for the evening.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €100 and €129, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either town. A small resort town and a country's average can differ by more than the two national figures differ from each other, so the gap says nothing about what either trip will cost you.
No weather station near Paphos records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and its monthly picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. Beaches are counted, not crowd-checked: Paphos's 27 beaches share the same warm months as everyone else's holiday, and Goreme's best summer weeks fall in the same window.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Goreme: 1991-2020 normals, Nevsehir (10.2 km from centre). Paphos: 1991-2020 normals, Paphos Airport (8.4 km from centre).
Goreme is at its best in high summer, when daytime highs reach 30°C and midsummer rainfall drops to 7-15mm. Outside that window it narrows quickly: winter days top out at 5°C in January, with rain spread through the cold months.
Paphos holds up over a longer stretch. From May to October highs run 25-31°C with rain under 15mm, and the sea stays swimmable into autumn. December is the exception, at 98mm, though days still reach 19°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
