Where they differ
Granada has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens, far more tourist attractions within walking distance for families, and more protected countryside around it, 27% against 11%. It is also the drier city, with 7 months at 40mm of rain or less where Santiago de Compostela has none.
Santiago de Compostela has about twice as much park space near the centre, which counts with small children, and a second UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach.
Where they are alike
Neither city is a place to swim. Granada has no beach nearby, and Santiago de Compostela's sea peaks at 17°C in August, so no month is warm enough for the water at either.
They are also matched for compactness, with a similar number of notable places within walking distance of the centre in both. Heritage is close as well: Granada has about twice as many museums, while Santiago de Compostela has a second UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach.
Which traveller are you?
Eating and going out: Granada. It has far more restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, plus more bars and clubs, most of them central enough to move between on foot.
Families: Granada again, with many more tourist attractions within walking distance of the centre. Santiago de Compostela has about twice as much park space nearby, but neither city has a theme park within reach.
Walkers and heritage travellers: Granada for open country, with 27% of the surrounding land protected against 11%. Santiago de Compostela for a cooler summer, around 25°C, and two UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value figures are identical for the two by construction: they express a national price level, not a measurement of either city. The comparison between them carries no information, and the €122 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a Granada or a Santiago price, so neither can be called the cheaper trip.
Granada's dry summer can mislead: July is close to rainless but reaches 35°C, which is hard work in a city whose attractions are best reached on foot. Santiago de Compostela's comfortable window is narrow, and the shoulder months that still work well in Granada arrive there with heavy rain.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Granada: 1991-2020 normals, Granada / Caserío Hospicio (5 km from centre). Santiago de Compostela: 1991-2020 normals, Santiago / Labacolla (8.4 km from centre).
Granada is at its best in May, at 25°C with 29mm of rain, and again in September, which is similarly dry. Midsummer is hot, 35°C in July, though almost rainless.
Santiago de Compostela is at its best in high summer, when highs reach 25°C and rainfall falls to 41-61mm, the driest stretch of its year. From November onwards it turns wet, above 200mm a month, with highs near 11°C, so winter trips are a different proposition.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
