The verdict

Choose Kotor if the sea decides it: 50 beaches within reach and water at 21°C or more for 5 months, in a small town where the evening is quiet.

Choose Skopje if you want the city part of a city break, with more places to eat and drink near the centre, more to walk to on foot, and more that suits children.

Where they differ

Kotor has the coast to itself: 50 beaches within reach and a sea that holds at 21°C or more for 5 months, peaking at 26°C in August. Skopje has no coast and no swimming season at all.

Skopje has many times as many restaurants near its centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, most of them central, and far more notable places within walking distance of where you sleep.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a heritage heavyweight. Skopje has about twice as many museums as Kotor and keeps them tightly around the centre; Kotor answers with 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, which Skopje cannot match.

Both also share a hot late summer, peaking in August at 32-33°C, and both sit in countries whose national price levels are estimated at a similar, modest daily figure.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming is the point of the trip, take Kotor: 50 beaches within reach and sea at 26°C in August, against a city with no coast and no swimming season at all.

If you want to eat widely and stay out late, Skopje. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre and many times as many bars and clubs, most of them central.

Families and walkers on a short stay are better served in Skopje, with about twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space and more to reach on foot. Neither has a theme park within range.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national price level, not a measurement of either city, and a coastal town or a capital can sit well away from its country's average, so the gap between €95 and €72 says little about what a day will actually cost.

Kotor's swimming months and its dry months are the same ones. Either side of them the coast is wet, up to 256mm in the wettest month, and the beaches that carry the place stop being a reason to go. Skopje stays drier through the year, but that does not make its coldest month, at 5°C, good walking weather.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Kotor: 1991-2020 normals, Podgorica / Golubovci (39.9 km from centre). Skopje: 1991-2020 (sunshine 1961-1990, rainfall 1961-1990) normals, Skopje-Petrovec (18.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Kotor is at its best from June to August, when highs run 30-33°C, the sea reaches 23-26°C and rainfall drops to 38-56mm. September keeps the water warm but brings 173mm, and the autumn only gets wetter.

Skopje is steadier: from May to June and again in September, highs run 24-29°C with rainfall of 32-58mm. Rain stays low there all year, so the choice is about temperature rather than wet days. Its winter days are the colder of the two.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
