The verdict
Choose La Spezia if you want a smaller seaside base where the water starts at the centre and summer afternoons run warmer, up to 30°C in August, and you are content with a modest choice of restaurants and bars.
Choose Nice if you want a walkable centre with a large number of notable places close together, a much wider range of kitchens and evenings that carry on after dinner.

Where they differ
La Spezia runs warmer through the year, with daytime highs of 11-30°C against Nice's 13-28°C, and the sea begins at the centre rather than 1km out. Its museums sit tightly around the centre.
Nice has many times as many notable places within walking distance of its centre, so days need less travel. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, about twice as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most of them central.
Where they are alike
Both put swimming at the heart of a summer trip: the sea is at La Spezia's centre and 1km from Nice's, and each has four months with the sea at 21°C or more.
Their weather patterns are close, with the same warmest and coolest months and much the same summer heat. Both have 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and protected countryside and central parks close enough to fill a day away from the coast.
Which traveller are you?
A traveller whose days are built around swimming can take either. Nice has more beaches, 70 against 32, while in La Spezia the water starts at the centre, and both offer the same run of warm sea months.
Anyone planning a trip around dinner and what follows should choose Nice: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, twice the places to drink and far more nightclubs.
Families and walkers also lean to Nice, with about twice the central park space, 3 theme parks within reach against 2, and 24% of the surrounding land protected against 13%.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €155 and €160, are national estimates for restaurant and hotel prices in each country, not measurements of either city. A small coastal town and a heavily visited city can each sit far from their national average, by more than the gap between them, so treat them as background rather than a reason to choose.
The months that rank highest in both are the driest and the busiest, so Nice's 70 beaches describe capacity in high season rather than quiet. Early autumn keeps the sea warm but brings a sharp rise in rain, which the headline ranking of those months does not show.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. La Spezia: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (64.8 km from centre). Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre).
La Spezia peaks from June to August, with highs of 27-30°C and rain down to 32-41mm. September keeps the sea warm but rain jumps to 102mm, and autumn stays wet. Its warmest afternoons are the hotter of the two, which matters if you want heat rather than only sun.
Nice holds the same summer with less rain, 13-18mm in July and August at 28°C, and its winter is marginally milder, with January highs of 13°C. November is the wettest month in both.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
