The verdict

Choose Ljubljana if you want a compact trip where the eating, drinking and walking sit in the same few streets, warmer summer days with highs reaching 28°C, and three UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Choose Munich if you are travelling with children, or want breadth: far more restaurants and bars near the centre, more museums, theme parks within reach, and drier autumn weather.

Where they differ

Ljubljana keeps things close: most of its bars are near the centre, where in Munich about half are, so evenings need less planning. It also runs warmer, highs of 4-28°C against 4-25°C, and has 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Munich's 1.

Munich is the wider city: many times as many restaurants near the centre, about three times as many places to drink and far more attractions aimed at children, plus three times as much park space and 2 theme parks within reach.

Where they are alike

The weather follows the same shape in both: January highs of 4°C, a July peak, and no month at 40mm of rain or less. Pack for rain in any season.

Neither is on the coast. Both have some beaches within reach, and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is not the reason to pick either. Both sit near a similar share of protected countryside, and both hold enough museums for several wet afternoons.

Which traveller are you?

Families with children: Munich. It has many times as many attractions near the centre, about three times as much park space, and 2 theme parks within reach where Ljubljana has none.

A weekend built around eating and going out: Munich for choice, with many times as many restaurants and far more bars; Ljubljana if you would rather have it all within a short walk of the centre.

Heritage travellers who like leaving town: Ljubljana, with 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Munich's 1, and warmer summer days; Munich answers with about three times as many museums for indoor days.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €131 and €163, are national estimates for Slovenia and Germany, the price level of restaurants and hotels across each country rather than a measurement of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit a long way from its own national average, and that gap can exceed the difference between the two figures.

Ljubljana's warmer summer does not mean drier: its wettest months are the ones you would travel in, and September, one of its mildest months, is the wettest of all at 159mm.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Ljubljana is the better pick in high summer, with highs of 28°C in July and August against Munich's 25°C, and it leads through May to September. Rain is heavy in those months, above 110mm.

Munich comes into its own in autumn and winter. September and October are much drier there, 78mm and 67mm against 150mm or more in Ljubljana, and its winter months are drier as well. Warmth is similar either side of summer, so the difference is mostly what falls on you.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
