Where they differ

Ljubljana holds about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, so a day's sightseeing works on foot, and it has roughly twice the park space close in. Slovenia's national price level is lower, at €131 a day against Germany's €163.

Nuremberg is the stronger choice with children: many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach where Ljubljana has none. Some 42% of the surrounding land is protected, against 13% around Ljubljana, which widens the day-trip options.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both are inland, and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more; Ljubljana counts 10 beaches within reach against Nuremberg's 6, but that is not a reason to pick either.

Museums and nights out are close. Nuremberg has more museums, Ljubljana's sit tighter around the centre, and the two have a similar number of places to drink, mostly central in both. Winters bottom out at 4°C in January either way.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Nuremberg. It has many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, 2 theme parks within reach, and 42% of the land around it protected, which gives a wider choice of days out.

A short break on foot: Ljubljana. Its notable places and its museums cluster tightly around the centre, park space is close in, and one base covers most of what you would want to see.

Eating and going out: Nuremberg has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and twice as many nightclubs, while Ljubljana matches it for places to drink and offers a wider range of kitchens.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €131 and €163, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels in Slovenia and Germany, not measurements of Ljubljana or Nuremberg. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit far from its country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither city should be read as the cheaper trip.

Warm does not mean dry in Ljubljana: its warmest months are also among its wettest, and its 10 beaches nearby come without a month of sea at 21°C or more, so plan around rain rather than swimming.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre). Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Ljubljana peaks from June to August at 26-28°C, warmer than Nuremberg manages all year. The rain comes with it, 114-126mm across those months, and autumn is wetter still.

Nuremberg runs cooler in the same weeks, 23-25°C, and drier, at 60-77mm. Spring is where it separates: April is 15°C with 33mm against Ljubljana's 96mm, and its autumn stays light near 50mm, so shoulder-season days are less likely to be lost to rain.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
