Where they differ
Ljubljana offers a somewhat wider range of kitchens, variety rather than volume. The larger gap is price level: the estimated daily budget is €131 for Slovenia against €248 for Switzerland, a national figure for restaurants and hotels, and the two countries sit further apart there than on anything else here.
Zurich has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, somewhat more places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs. In both, most sit near the centre, so the difference is choice, not distance.
Where they are alike
Neither is a swimming destination. The 23 beaches near Zurich and the 10 near Ljubljana are lake and river rather than coast, and neither city has a month with water at 21°C or more.
They are close, too, on museums, on how much sits within walking distance of the centre, on families and on nearby nature: Zurich holds more museums, Ljubljana's sit tighter around the centre, and protected land runs to 16% around Zurich against 13% around Ljubljana.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone building a trip around eating out and late nights should take Zurich: about three times as many restaurants near the centre, somewhat more places to drink, and about three times as many nightclubs, most within walking distance.
A traveller who wants heritage on foot is better served in Ljubljana, where the museums sit tightly around the centre and 3 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against Zurich's 1.
Families split. Ljubljana has about twice as many attractions and twice as much park space near the centre; Zurich has 2 theme parks within reach where Ljubljana has none. Choose by whether your days are walked or driven.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget is a national estimate, €131 for Slovenia and €248 for Switzerland, covering restaurant and hotel price levels rather than either city. Capitals and heavily visited cities sit well away from their country's average, sometimes by more than the gap between the two figures, so it cannot tell you what either trip actually costs.
Warm months here are also wet ones. Neither city has a month at 40mm of rain or less, and Ljubljana's high-summer warmth comes alongside its heaviest rainfall. The beaches counted near both are inland water, not coast, so neither supports a beach holiday.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).
Ljubljana is the warmer of the two in high summer, with highs of 28°C in July and August. Its autumn is the wetter, 159mm in September and 150mm in October, so shoulder-season days there are damp ones.
Zurich stays at 24°C in the same weeks, easier going if heat bothers you, and its autumn is the drier of the two, closer to 85-87mm, with highs of 19°C easing to 14°C as the month turns.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
