The verdict

Choose Dubai if you want to swim at any point in the year, eat across a wide range of kitchens and have somewhere to go after dark, and if you can travel between November and March.

Choose Monaco if you would rather walk to most of what you came for, want protected countryside within day-trip reach, and prefer a summer that tops out near 28°C.

Where they differ

Dubai has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider spread of kitchens, plus many times as many bars and nightclubs, though only about half of those sit near the centre. Its swimming season is the real gap: 12 months with the sea at 21°C or more against Monaco's 4.

Monaco is the better base for getting out of town, with 24% of the surrounding land protected against 4% around Dubai, and it packs many more notable places into walking distance of the centre.

Where they are alike

The two hold about the same number of museums, so heritage alone will not decide it. Dubai's cluster more tightly around the centre; Monaco counts 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Both are warmest in August and both meet the sea at the centre, 0km out. Families are served either way: Dubai has more attractions near its centre and 4 theme parks within reach against Monaco's 3, though Monaco has more park space near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

A swimmer who travels for the water should take Dubai: 12 months with the sea at 21°C or more, against a short Monaco season, and slightly more beaches to choose from.

A traveller who wants to walk everywhere and then get out into open country should take Monaco, which puts many more notable places within walking distance and has 24% of the land around it protected.

Someone planning the trip around eating out and going out late should take Dubai, with many times as many restaurants and a far wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs; Monaco's are few, but nearly all central.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The dataset carries no daily budget figure for either city, so nothing in it says which trip is dearer, and the value axis rests on a different measure entirely.

The sunshine figure is missing for Dubai, not low, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured; the monthly picture there rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. A full year of swimmable sea also flatters the summer: water at 33°C comes with air at 42°C. Monaco's four warm sea months are also its only ones, so the swimming window there is fixed rather than chosen.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

No sunshine record

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre). Dubai: 1991-2020 normals, Dubai International Airport (3.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Dubai suits a trip between November and March, when highs run 25-31°C and no month brings more than 21mm of rain. In high summer, highs of 42°C are what limit the day rather than any rain, since the dry season is total.

Monaco is at its best in July and August: highs of 28°C, sea at 25°C and its driest weeks, 13-18mm. Autumn is the caution, with rain past 120mm a month, and winter highs sit far below Dubai's.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
