The verdict

Choose Monaco if you want the sea at the centre, protected countryside within reach, a dry midsummer, winters that stay around 13°C and a wider spread of cuisines.

Choose Venice if museums and walkable sights matter most, with far more places to eat and drink close at hand, and a trip you can budget at about €155 a day.

Where they differ

Monaco is the better base for open country: 24% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Venice, and it has about twice as many nightclubs. Its restaurants span a wider range of kitchens.

Venice is the stronger heritage city: about twice as many museums, clustered close to the centre, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Monaco's 2. It also has many times as many places to drink and about three times as many restaurants near the centre.

Where they are alike

Both are swimming destinations. Each has 4 months of sea at 21°C or more, peaking in August at 25°C in Monaco and 26°C in Venice.

They are also close on eating out and on year-round climate: neither is a heavyweight food city, Monaco through variety and Venice through sheer numbers, and both deliver warm summers alongside winters that never turn severe.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers should take Monaco. The sea starts at the centre, there are 50 beaches nearby against Venice's 20, and both cities give 4 months of sea at 21°C or more.

Museum-goers should take Venice. It has about twice as many museums, packed tightly around the centre, roughly three times as many notable places within walking distance, and more UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach.

Families will find more to do in Venice, with many times as many attractions near the centre, though both have 3 theme parks within reach. Travellers who want protected countryside should pick Monaco instead.

What the numbers don't tell you

No daily cost figure exists for Monaco in this data, so the two cannot be compared on price at all. Venice's roughly €155 a day stands on its own, with nothing to hold it against, and nothing here indicates whether Monaco is dearer or cheaper.

Strong beach standing means different things in each. Monaco's water is at the centre, but the swimming season runs into an autumn that turns wet, while Venice's sea sits 4km out and its warmest stretch is also when a tightly packed centre carries the most visitors.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
