The verdict

Choose Monaco if you want the sea: 50 beaches nearby, four months warm enough to swim in, daytime highs reaching 28°C in summer and far more sunshine over the year.

Choose Zurich if you build trips around eating and evenings: far more restaurants and a wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and nightclubs, and more museums for the wet days.

Where they differ

Monaco is the coastal trip: 50 beaches nearby where Zurich has 23, and four months when the sea reaches 21°C or more, which Zurich cannot offer at all. It also runs warmer through the year, 13-28°C against 4-24°C.

Zurich is the city trip: about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, plus many times as many bars and nightclubs, most of them close to the centre. It also has about three times as many museums.

Where they are alike

For families the two land in much the same place, by different routes. Monaco packs about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre, Zurich has roughly three times as much park space, and both have theme parks within reach.

Both also concentrate their sights: in each, the notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, Monaco a little more tightly. And each has protected land around it for days out, 24% near Monaco against 16% near Zurich.

Which traveller are you?

If you plan your days around swimming and sun, Monaco is the only option here: 50 beaches nearby, four months of sea at 21°C or more, and winter highs still near 13°C.

If your evenings matter more than your afternoons, choose Zurich: many times as many bars and nightclubs, about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider spread of kitchens, plus far more museums for wet days.

Families are a closer call. Monaco has more tourist attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach; Zurich has far more park space and a compact centre you can walk.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The data carries a daily budget for Zurich, about €248, but no equivalent figure for Monaco, so nothing on this page tells you which of the two makes the more expensive trip. Judge them on what they offer instead.

Monaco's strengths stack into one short window. Its warmest, driest and best swimming months are the same months, and once they end the rain climbs sharply, so a shoulder trip is a different proposition. Zurich has the opposite problem: its warmest months are also its wettest, and much of what it is good at, eating, drinking and museums, is indoor anyway.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Monaco: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (19.9 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Monaco is at its best from June to September: highs of 25-28°C, sea at 21-25°C and a dry midsummer, under 20mm. Autumn rain then climbs above 120mm, so the shoulder is worth checking. Monaco also gets far more sunshine across the year than Zurich.

Zurich's warm window is July and August at 24°C, though those are among its wettest months, near 120mm. September is drier and still reaches 19°C. Winter is the weak stretch, cold enough that a visit is mostly indoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
