The verdict

Choose Munich if you are travelling with children or want a compact walking trip: more attractions and park space near the centre, theme parks within reach, and a wider range of kitchens.

Choose Turin if you want warmer days through the year, highs of 7-29°C against Munich's 4-25°C, and a trip built around heritage beyond the city itself.

Where they differ

Munich puts more within walking distance of the centre, roughly twice as many notable places and attractions, and about three times the park space. It also has 2 theme parks within reach and greener surroundings, with 17% of the land around the city protected against 6% around Turin. Its restaurants cover a wider range of kitchens.

Turin runs warmer through the year, 7-29°C against 4-25°C, and although the two hold similar numbers of museums, its day trips reach more UNESCO-listed places.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a swimming destination. Munich has 6 beaches within reach and Turin 1, but neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so water is a side trip rather than a reason to book either.

Evenings compare closely: similar numbers of places to drink, about half of them near the centre. The two also hold a similar number of museums, and the national budget estimates behind them are close.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Munich. More attractions and park space close to the centre, two theme parks within reach, and green space around the city for a day out when the museums run out.

Heritage-minded traveller: Turin. Museum counts are close, but four UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against Munich's one, which gives a week out of town a clearer shape.

A short city break on foot: Munich concentrates about twice as many notable places within walking distance, and its restaurants span more kitchens. If you would rather have warmer, milder days in spring or autumn, take Turin.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices, not measurements of Munich or Turin. A large or heavily visited city can sit well away from its country's average, by more than the gap between them, so neither figure tells you which trip will cost more.

No weather station near Turin records sunshine hours, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured; its monthly ratings rest on temperature and rainfall alone. Warmth and dryness do not coincide: Munich's warmest months are also its wettest, while Turin's mild September and October bring its heaviest rain.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre). Turin: 1991-2020 normals, Torino / Caselle (15.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Munich is at its best in July and August, with highs of 25°C, though those are also its wettest months, 117-121mm from June to August. September, at 20°C and 78mm, and October, at 15°C and 67mm, are the drier, easier weeks.

Turin holds warmth longer and further into the shoulders. Its summer runs to 26-29°C, with July the driest of the three at 57mm, and September stays at 24°C, though the autumn rain is its heaviest, 116mm then 113mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
