Nha Trang or Phuket?
Our verdict in twelve categories, each scored against the same fixed benchmark cities, and the climate month by month, so you can choose for your trip.
Choose Nha Trang for
- prices
- getting around
Nha Trang suits a straightforward, low-cost beach vacation. Its single town beach lies directly in front of the hotels, the seafront strip can be covered on foot, and rooms, street food and short rides cost little. The warm mud baths are a pleasure Phuket has no equivalent for. Its dry season also runs through the European summer, when Phuket's west coast is battered by the monsoon.
Choose Phuket for
- nightlife
- nature and the outdoors
- day trips
Choose Phuket for a richer and more varied trip, and be ready to pay more and to rely on taxis. You get a different bay for each mood, from Patong's crowds to quiet Nai Harn, much bigger nights out around Bangla Road, and the limestone towers of Phang Nga Bay to kayak among. The island also has spa retreats and training camps that make wellness a reason to go in its own right. It shines from late autumn to early spring.

What the scores mean for a trip.
Beaches & swimming
Nha Trang's appeal is convenience: one long sandy crescent runs along Tran Phu, so you walk from your hotel straight onto the sand. For emptier beaches you go south towards Cam Ranh, north to Doc Let or out by boat to the islands.
Phuket has the better beaches because of their range. Crowded Patong, broad Kata and Karon, sheltered Nai Harn and the long, empty sand at Mai Khao each feel different, and island beaches are a boat ride away. The risky months differ: Nha Trang's sea turns rough from October to December, while Phuket's west coast has dangerous rip currents from May to October.
Food & drink
The two eat equally well but in different ways. Nha Trang is about seafood picked from tanks and grilled at your table, along with local specialities such as bun cha ca fish-cake noodles, nem nuong pork rolls and banh can, all served with strong iced coffee.
Phuket's distinctive cooking comes from its Hokkien and Peranakan heritage and is found in Phuket Town: thick yellow noodles, peppery moo hong and morning dim sum, alongside fiery southern curries. It also has a wider range of upmarket resort dining, where Nha Trang's options are thin.
Culture & sights
Neither is a culture destination, and either can be covered in a day or two. In Nha Trang the highlight is Po Nagar, a group of Cham brick towers still used for worship, plus a few monuments spread around a mostly modern town. Phuket's history is something you walk through: Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses, clan houses and tin barons' mansions make a streetscape, with Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha elsewhere on the island.
Nightlife
Phuket has much more going on after dark. Bangla Road in Patong closes to traffic each night for beer bars and big clubs that run until dawn, and away from it there are stylish beach clubs at Bang Tao and Kamala and easy-going bars in Kata and Rawai.
Nha Trang's nights are on a smaller scale. A few backpacker streets offer bar crawls and fire shows on the sand, and the most local night out is beer with grilled seafood at long outdoor tables. It is fun, but it would not be a reason to choose the town.
Nature & outdoors
Both are bay landscapes with good diving, but Phuket's reach is wider. Phang Nga Bay's sheer limestone towers and hidden lagoons are explored by sea kayak, and boats run to the Racha islands, Phi Phi and the Similans, which have some of Thailand's best reefs. Khao Phra Thaeo adds rainforest trails and gibbons.
Nha Trang's natural setting is a ring of green islands with mountains behind. Snorkelling in the protected waters around Hon Mun and scrambling up the rocky stream at Ba Ho are the highlights, and there is less to fill a week outdoors.
Day trips
Phuket has more places within a day's reach, though nearly all of them are other islands and beach towns: Phi Phi Don by ferry, the quiet Koh Yao islands, and Krabi or Ao Nang on the mainland.
Nha Trang has fewer outings, but its best one is the heritage trip Phuket lacks. Two hours south at Phan Rang are the hilltop Po Klong Garai towers and Cham villages that still make pottery and weaving. Otherwise there are fishing islands such as Binh Ba, and Dalat needs an overnight stay.
Good for families
Families fare about equally well in both, in different ways. Nha Trang is compact: the gentle town beach, the island amusement park on Hon Tre with its rides, water park and aquarium, and the mud-bath parks children love are all close together. Phuket works as a resort base, with kids' clubs, big pools and quiet shallows at Kata or Nai Harn, but every outing to the aquarium at Cape Panwa or an elephant sanctuary means a taxi. Patong's main strip is also not suitable for children at night.
Getting around
Nha Trang is easier. Hotels, restaurants and the beach lie along one walkable seafront strip, and cheap ride-hailing cars and motorbike taxis cover anything further, although the airport at Cam Ranh is about 35km away.
Phuket is a large, hilly island with its beaches spread along a winding road. The west-coast bus is infrequent and stops early, and songthaews don't run between beaches, so most journeys mean expensive taxis or a risky scooter ride on steep bends.
Shopping & style
Phuket has more to browse. There are air-conditioned malls with international brands, tailors who make suits to measure, and in Phuket Town's old quarter small galleries, batik and local design shops plus the Sunday walking market on Thalang Road. Nha Trang's shopping is mainly the round Cho Dam market hall, with dried squid, cashews and coffee, and a beachside night market. Look out for its pearls and agarwood, and haggle at the stalls.
Affordability
Nha Trang costs clearly less. A mid-range hotel with a pool or sea view, meals at street stalls and short motorbike-taxi rides all cost very little, and the main temples charge almost nothing to enter.
Phuket is good value by Western standards but dearer than most of Thailand. Taxis are the biggest expense because there is no real public transport, and beach-hotel rates rise sharply from December to February. Monsoon-season discounts help if you can accept the rough sea.
Live music & performing arts
Neither is a place for theatre or concerts, but Phuket has a little more to watch. Its large ladyboy cabaret revues and Thai cultural shows are at least a proper evening out, and Muay Thai bouts in Patong add spectacle. In Nha Trang it comes down to cover bands in hotel lounges and the occasional staged Cham music or folk dance show.
Wellness & relaxation
Phuket is the stronger choice, and many people go there for wellness alone. It has resort spas with treatment pavilions in the jungle, retreats offering yoga, meditation and detox programmes, and the Muay Thai and fitness camps in Chalong where visitors train for weeks. The quiet bases are Mai Khao, Nai Harn and the east coast.
Nha Trang offers something Phuket lacks entirely: warm mineral mud baths and hot spring pools near Thap Ba. Beyond that it has street-corner massage shops and slow beach mornings, though the high-rise centre stays noisy with scooters.

Where the figures come from
Phuket's temperatures are measured 27 km from the centre, at Phuket Airport.
Temperature and rainfall are climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Nha Trang: 1991-2020 normals, Nha Trang (1.1 km from centre). Phuket: 1991-2020 (sunshine 1961-1990, rainfall 1981-2010) normals, Phuket Airport (26.9 km from centre).
The two have their rainy seasons at different times of year, which often decides the choice. Nha Trang is mostly dry from January to August, and sunniest from February to May. The sea is warm enough for long swims from April to October, at around 29°C, but middays from May to September reach 32°C to 33°C and make walking the streets hard work. The rains arrive in September and peak in November at around 390mm, with rough surf, and December has the dullest skies of the year. In January and February the sea cools to about 25°C, still pleasant but noticeably fresher.
Phuket is at its best from December to March, the sunniest stretch of its year. January and February are the driest, with only light showers on either side. Its sea stays warm in every month, but from May to October the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain, at its worst in September, and dangerous swells on the west coast. Phuket is also hot all year, so sightseeing on foot is best done early or late. In short, Phuket suits December to March, and Nha Trang spring and summer.
Which traveller are you?
On a tight budget, Nha Trang goes further. Mid-range hotels with pools, noodle soups, drip coffee and motorbike taxis all cost little, and the compact seafront strip means you rarely need a ride. In Phuket, taxi fares and peak-season room rates soon add up.
For a food and nightlife trip, Phuket is the stronger pick. Patong's Bangla Road runs until dawn, Bang Tao has sunset beach clubs, and Phuket Town's Hokkien noodles and dim sum give you a reason to eat beyond the resorts.
On a relaxing and wellness trip, Phuket offers far more depth. There are jungle spa pavilions, yoga and detox retreats, and quiet bases at Mai Khao or Rawai. Nha Trang's mud baths and hot springs make a lovely half day, but its noisy centre is less restful.
