The verdict

Choose Nice if you want swimming and open country: the sea sits 1km from the centre, a quarter of the surrounding land is protected, and there are roughly twice as many restaurants near the centre.

Choose Venice if you would rather cover museums and monuments on foot: far more notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, and more UNESCO-listed sites lie within day-trip reach.

Where they differ

Nice is the better base for days out of town. About 24% of the surrounding land is protected against 4% around Venice, and it has roughly three times as much park space near the centre. Its eating is broader too, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre.

Venice puts far more within walking distance: many times as many notable places, and many times as many visitor attractions near the centre, which makes short days with children simple. Both have 3 theme parks within reach.

Where they are alike

Both are swimming destinations. Each has four months with the sea at 21°C or more, warmest in August. The water is 1km from Nice's centre and 4km from Venice's, so neither keeps you far from it.

Neither is a late-night city: drinking places sit near the centre in both, and clubs are scarce in Venice and only somewhat commoner in Nice. Summer highs are close, and the two national daily-budget estimates behind them differ little.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming drives the trip, Nice is the simpler choice: the sea sits 1km from the centre against 4km in Venice, and 70 beaches lie nearby against Venice's 20.

Anyone travelling for museums and heritage should go to Venice, which has about twice as many museums as Nice, keeps them tightly around the centre, and puts more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Families weighing indoor sights against outdoor space: Venice has far more attractions close to the centre, Nice more park space and much more protected countryside around it. Both have 3 theme parks within reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

Beach and weather figures flatten the calendar. Nice's swimming season is narrow, and the months either side are its wettest, 124mm in October and 138mm in November, so a mild January high of 13°C does not mean a dry month. Venice runs warmer in summer but also wetter through it.

The daily budget figure is a national estimate per country, the price level of restaurants and hotels, not a measurement of either city. A heavily visited city can sit far from its own country average, by more than the two national figures differ, so it cannot tell you which trip costs more.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre). Venice: 1991-2020 normals, Treviso / S. Angelo (26.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Nice peaks in July and August, with highs of 28°C, sea at 24-25°C and just 13-18mm of rain in those two months. June and September remain warm. October and November are the ones to avoid, at 124mm and 138mm.

Venice suits May and June best, with highs of 24-28°C and the sea reaching 23°C by June, though May brings 91mm of rain. January is the clearest gap: highs of 8°C against 13°C in Nice.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
