The verdict
Choose Nice if swimming is the point. It has far more beaches, a sea warm enough for a good part of the summer, and the driest, sunniest summer months.
Choose Zurich if you would rather spend the days in museums and the evenings out, in a centre where most of what you want to see is within walking distance, and summer highs of 24°C suit you better than 28°C.

Where they differ
Nice has 70 beaches nearby against Zurich's 23, and four months when the sea sits at 21°C or above, which Zurich has none of. It runs warmer all year, 13-28°C against 4-24°C, and drier in summer. More of the land around it is protected, 24% against 16%.
Zurich has about three times as many museums, roughly twice as many places to drink and three times as many nightclubs, and about twice as many notable places within walking distance of its centre.
Where they are alike
Places to eat is where they sit closest. Nice has somewhat more restaurants near the centre, but the range of kitchens is similar in both, so neither will feel narrow over a week.
Neither is built around children. Zurich has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre, Nice more park space and 3 theme parks within reach against Zurich's 2. In both, the nightlife stays near the centre.
Which traveller are you?
If the trip is built around swimming, Nice is the only real answer. It has far more beaches, four months of sea at 21°C or above and roughly 2743 hours of sun a year against Zurich's 1664.
If you want museums by day and bars by night, Zurich holds about three times as many museums and twice as many places to drink, most within walking distance of the centre.
Families are less well served in either. Nice offers park space, warm sea and 3 theme parks within reach; Zurich answers with about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €160 and €248, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Nice or Zurich. Either city can sit a long way from its own country's average, and that distance can be wider than the gap between the two figures, so neither number tells you what a week on the ground will cost.
Nice's beach strength is concentrated in the same two months everyone else travels in, and its driest weather is also its hottest. Zurich's warmest months are its wettest, so a warm forecast there is not a dry one.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Nice: 1991-2020 normals, Nice (8 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).
Nice is at its best in July and August, with highs of 28°C, sea at 24-25°C and only 13-18mm of rain. May and June are warm and still dry. Late autumn turns wet, 124mm in October and 138mm in November.
Zurich peaks in July and August too, at 24°C, but summer is its wet season, near 120mm a month. September, at 19°C and 87mm, is the steadier choice; winter days sit at 4°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
