The verdict

Choose Nuremberg if you are travelling with children or want countryside within reach: attractions cluster near the centre and 42% of the surrounding land is protected, and its drier spring gives a wider usable season.

Choose Zurich if you want a compact walking city with more museums and restaurants near the centre and about twice as many nightclubs, and you accept a wetter year.

Where they differ

Nuremberg suits families better: it has many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, and both cities have 2 theme parks within reach. It also has the stronger countryside, with 42% of the surrounding land protected against 16% around Zurich. The national daily budget estimate behind it is €163, against €248 for Zurich's country.

Zurich is the tighter city to walk, with about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, and about twice as much park space near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Zurich has 23 beaches nearby and Nuremberg 6, but no month brings water to 21°C in either, so swimming is incidental rather than a reason to go.

Eating out and culture land close together. Zurich has somewhat more restaurants near the centre, but the range of kitchens is similar, and both have 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach. Nightlife differs mainly in club numbers; in both, the drinking is concentrated centrally.

Which traveller are you?

Families with children: Nuremberg. It has many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, so days need less planning, and both cities put 2 theme parks within reach if that is the draw.

A short city break on foot: Zurich. Notable places sit about twice as densely around its centre, and it has somewhat more museums and restaurants near the centre, plus about twice as many nightclubs.

Walkers and day-trippers: Nuremberg. 42% of the land around it is protected against 16% around Zurich, and its drier months, four of them at 40mm or less, make getting out simpler.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €248, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Nuremberg or Zurich. A heavily visited city can sit far from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two national figures, so treat them as background rather than as what your trip will cost.

The weather figures pull in opposite directions in each city. Nuremberg's driest months, at 40mm or less, are also its coldest, near 4-5°C. Zurich's warmest months are among its wettest, so its best temperatures and its best conditions do not coincide.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Nuremberg's best run is June to August, with highs of 23-25°C and rain peaking at 77mm in July. Spring separates the two: Nuremberg has four months at 40mm or less, where Zurich has none, so April and May stay usable.

Zurich's window is July and August, at 24°C. Those are also among its wettest months, near 126mm, and May and June are no drier, so an early-summer trip should count on rain rather than sun.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
