What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €160 for Austria and €138 for Croatia, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices, not measurements of either city. A capital and a heavily visited small city can each sit far from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two, so treat them as background.

Beaches are listed near both, but neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is incidental. Salzburg's warmest months are also its wettest, so peak warmth and dry weather do not arrive together; Zagreb's wettest month is September, just as its temperatures ease.
