Where they differ

San Sebastian puts the sea at the centre, 0km away against 3km in Valencia, and slightly more of its surrounding land is protected, at 11%. It has three UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach and one theme park within range, where Valencia has none.

Valencia has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens, plus far more bars and nightclubs, most of them central. It also runs warmer through the year, with highs of 17-31°C against San Sebastian's 11-23°C.

Where they are alike

The two are closest on what sits within walking distance of the centre: each has a comparable number of notable places in its core, so in either you can fill a day on foot without arranging transport.

Open country is a similar proposition from both, with 11% of the land around San Sebastian protected and 10% around Valencia. Beach choice is comparable too, 10 near San Sebastian and 12 near Valencia, with the sea warmest in August in both.

Swimmers should take Valencia: the sea holds 21°C or more for five months of the year against San Sebastian's two, though the beaches sit 3km out from the centre rather than at it.

Anyone travelling for meals out and late evenings should also take Valencia, which has many times as many restaurants near the centre, a wider spread of kitchens, and far more bars and clubs, nearly all central.

Families are a closer call. Valencia has more attractions and park space near the centre, while San Sebastian has one theme park within reach and slightly more protected land for days out.

What the numbers don't tell you

Value is the one axis where the two are identical, and that is by construction: it reflects a national price level rather than either city, so the comparison between them carries no information. The €122 daily budget beside it is a single national estimate, not a measurement of San Sebastian or Valencia.

San Sebastian's beach standing rests on the water being at the centre rather than on conditions: no month there sees less than 90mm of rain, and its warmest sea months are also its busiest. Valencia's weather advantage peaks at 31°C in August, which is a lot for walking a city.

San Sebastian is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 22-23°C and the sea is 21-22°C. Rain is a constant rather than a season there, and November is the wettest month at 203mm, so shoulder visits carry risk.

Valencia works over a much longer stretch. May and June bring highs of 24-28°C with little rain, July is the driest month at 7mm, and autumn stays warm, though September is the wettest at 70mm and worth watching.
