Where they differ

Santiago is much the smaller city, about 101,000 people to Valencia's 841,000, and the more compact visit: its museums sit tightly around the centre, and slightly more of the land around it is protected.

Valencia has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, most of them central. The sea is 3km away, with 12 beaches and five months of water at 21°C or warmer; Santiago's coast is 26km off and has none.

Where they are alike

Both sit in comparable green settings: protected land covers 11% of the area around Santiago and 10% around Valencia, and each has a similar amount of park space near the centre, so time outdoors is easy to arrange in either.

Their centres work in similar ways too. Each has two UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, the notable sights in both are grouped within walking distance, and neither has a theme park, so families fall back on parks and city attractions.

If you are travelling for the sea, this is not a close call. Valencia has 12 beaches with the water 3km from the centre and five warm-sea months; Santiago's coast is 26km away and it has none.

For eating out and late nights, Valencia again: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, nearly all of them centrally placed.

For a walking break built on heritage rather than volume, Santiago fits better: fewer museums, but all of them tight around the centre, cooler summers topping out at 25°C, and countryside close by.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. It is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €122 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Nothing here tells you which trip costs less.

Valencia's beach advantage is a high-season advantage: the 12 beaches and the warmest water arrive in the months when everyone else does. Santiago's dry window is narrow, two low-rain months in a year where October, November and December each carry over 200mm, so a shoulder-season visit is a different trip from the summer one.

Valencia holds up far longer. May and June are warm and dry, with highs of 24-28°C, and July is the driest month at 7mm. August peaks at 31°C with the sea at 26°C. September and October stay warm but bring the year's heaviest rain, 66-70mm.
