Where they differ
Skopje has somewhat more restaurants near the centre than Split and a much wider range of kitchens, so eating out varies more from night to night. It also concentrates more of what there is to see within walking distance of the centre.
Split's advantage is the water and the past: 87 beaches nearby and four months of sea at 21°C or more, against no coast at all in Skopje. It also has somewhat more museums, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Where they are alike
Neither city is short of protected country nearby: 11% of the land around Skopje is protected against 9% around Split, and day trips from either mean landscape rather than big-ticket attractions.
The weather works across the year in both, Skopje warmer in summer and Split milder in winter. Nightlife is similar in scale too: Skopje has somewhat more places to drink and about as many nightclubs, and in both most of them are near the centre.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming and old stone are the point, Split: 87 beaches nearby, sea at 21°C or more for four months, more museums than Skopje and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
For eating and going out, Skopje. It has somewhat more restaurants near the centre than Split and a much wider range of kitchens, plus somewhat more places to drink, most of them close in.
Families with children lean Skopje, with about twice as many tourist attractions and twice as much park space near the centre. Neither has a theme park within reach, so plan around parks and walking.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €72 for Skopje's country and €138 for Split's, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited coast can sit far from its national average, by more than the gap between the two, so they say little about what your trip will cost.
Split's beaches and warm sea belong to the months everyone else picks, and the quieter shoulder is also the wet one, with rain climbing steeply through autumn. Skopje's dry summers read well until you notice high summer at 32°C with nowhere to swim.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Skopje: 1991-2020 (sunshine 1961-1990, rainfall 1961-1990) normals, Skopje-Petrovec (18.3 km from centre). Split: 1991-2020 normals, Split / Marjan (0.9 km from centre).
Skopje's best stretch runs May to June and returns in September, with highs of 24-29°C and September rain at 32mm. High summer reaches 32°C, dry but with no sea to cool off in, and midwinter is the weak point.
Split earns its keep from June to September, when the sea sits at 22-25°C and July is the driest month at 25mm. Autumn is the trade-off: 82mm in September, 117mm in November.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
