The verdict

Choose Annecy if the outdoors is the point: more protected land around it, more park space near the centre, and a warmer year, reaching 27°C in July.

Choose Lucerne if you want museums, notable places within walking distance of the centre and a little more after dark, and you will accept cooler, wetter summer months for it.

Where they differ

Annecy has the stronger outdoors: 20% of the land around it is protected against 7% around Lucerne, and about twice as much park space near the centre. The national price levels behind them, €160 a day in France and €248 in Switzerland, differ widely, though these are country figures.

Lucerne packs more into a short visit: about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre and roughly three times as many museums. Annecy's counterweight is 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Lucerne's 1.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Lucerne has 16 beaches nearby and Annecy 9, but neither gets a month with water at 21°C or more, so a dip is a brief affair rather than a reason to book.

Eating out is close to a tie: Annecy has somewhat more restaurants near the centre, Lucerne a somewhat wider range of kitchens. Nightlife is modest in both and clustered centrally, and both follow the same seasonal shape, cold winters and warm rather than hot summers.

Which traveller are you?

Walkers and day-trippers: Annecy. With 20% of the surrounding land protected against 7% around Lucerne, and more park space near the centre, time outdoors needs less arranging and less travelling.

Museum and city-sight travellers: Lucerne. Roughly three times as many museums, and about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, mean a two-day visit on foot fills itself.

Families: it depends on the day you want. Lucerne has far more attractions near the centre for a compact itinerary; Annecy answers with more park space and 3 theme parks within reach against Lucerne's 1.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget, €160 against €248, is a national price level for France and Switzerland, not a measurement of either city. A heavily visited lakeside town can sit well above its country's average, and that gap can exceed the gap between the two figures.

The months that look best are also wet: neither city has a month at 40mm of rain or less, and Lucerne's warmest stretch is its wettest, so a strong summer does not promise dry days. The beach counts carry a similar catch, since the water never reaches a temperature most people would swim in for long.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Annecy: 1991-2020 normals, Geneve-Cointrin (39 km from centre). Lucerne: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (41.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Annecy is the better bet from June to August, with highs of 24-27°C, rainfall near 80mm and September still reaching 21°C, so the shoulder season stays usable for walking.

Lucerne is warmest in July and August at 24°C, but late spring and early summer are much wetter there, 119-128mm a month, so plan for indoor hours. Its drier stretch arrives in autumn, nearer 85mm, when days are cooler.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
