Where they differ

Antwerp is the stronger night out: roughly twice as many places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs, and most of them sit near the centre, so an evening needs little planning. Its coast amounts to a single beach.

The Hague has 34 beaches within reach and sea that peaks at 19°C in August. It also has about three times as much park space near the centre, and slightly more protected land around it, 8% against 7%.

Where they are alike

Both put a similar number of notable places within walking distance of the centre, so either city works as a short trip on foot without much use of transport.

They are close in other respects too. Both national price levels sit around €180 a day. Summers are mild rather than hot, with highs of 23°C in Antwerp and 21°C in The Hague, and both cities offer a similar range of kitchens.

Which traveller are you?

A couple after evenings out will prefer Antwerp, which has many more places to drink and clubs than The Hague, most of them near enough to the centre to walk between, and somewhat more restaurants close by.

A family with young children is better served by The Hague: 34 beaches within reach, noticeably more park space near the centre, and 7 theme parks within reach against Antwerp's 3.

Someone travelling for museums and older architecture should take Antwerp, where the collections sit tightly around the centre and 9 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach against The Hague's 4.

What the numbers don't tell you

The Hague's beaches are real, but the water peaks at 19°C in August, which is the month most people go, so the coast can be busy at exactly the point it is warm enough to use. Neither city has a month with sea at 21°C or more.

The daily budget figures, around €180, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. The gap between the two countries is small, and a capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own national average than the two figures sit from each other.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Antwerp: 1991-2020 normals, Antwerpen / Deurne (5.2 km from centre). The Hague: 1991-2020 normals, Valkenburg (13.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Antwerp is the better bet across the warm half of the year, with highs of 19-23°C from May to September, slightly above The Hague's, and a drier start to autumn, 67mm against 78mm. April is the driest month in both, 47mm here.

The Hague earns its place in high summer, when the sea reaches 18-19°C in August and rain is a touch lighter there, 84mm against 90mm. Its autumn is wetter.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
