What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national estimates, €125 for Greece and €100 for Turkey, describing restaurant and hotel price levels across each country rather than either city. A capital and a well-known coastal resort can each sit some way from their own national average, and that gap can be wider than the difference between the two figures, so this does not show one city costing more than the other.

Athens is at its best in May, when highs sit at 27°C and the rain has largely stopped, and again in September and October as heat drops back towards 24°C. Its winter is wet but consistently less so than Bodrum's, which makes a cool-season city break more workable.

Bodrum's window opens in May and June and peaks in September, with highs near 28°C and the sea still at 24°C. Midsummer is effectively rainless but hotter, and the winter is the sharper contrast: December brings 147mm.
