Where they differ

Athens has 14 beaches nearby and 5 months of sea at 21°C or more, where Skopje has none of either. It also has many times as many museums, 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and many times as many bars and clubs, about half of them near the centre.

Skopje offers a wider range of kitchens and more protected land around it, 11% against 5%. Most of its drinking places sit near the centre, so evenings involve less travelling between them.

Where they are alike

Both are cities first. The land around each is only lightly protected, both keep park space near the centre, Athens about twice as much, and day trips are an option rather than the reason to come.

Anyone building a trip around swimming wants Athens too, the only one of the two with a coast: 14 beaches nearby and sea at 21°C or more for 5 months.

Someone watching costs, or after a compact evening city, fits Skopje better: North Macedonia's national budget estimate is €72 a day, most drinking places sit near the centre, and the range of kitchens is wider.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €125 for Greece and €72 for North Macedonia, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A capital, or a heavily visited city, can sit far from its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so read them as background rather than as what your trip will cost.

Athens's beaches and warm sea belong to the same months as 35°C afternoons and the heaviest visitor numbers, so the swimming season and the easiest sightseeing season are not the same weeks. The near-rainless summer also sits beside the wettest end of the year.

Skopje reads best in June and September, with highs of 26-29°C; May is its wettest month at 58mm. Winter is the clear gap, with daytime highs near 5°C and no coast to soften it.
