Where they differ

Skopje's food is about range rather than volume: fewer restaurants near the centre, but a much wider spread of kitchens. It also has twice as much park space close to the centre. North Macedonia's estimated daily budget is €72 against Greece's €125, a national figure.

Thessaloniki has the sea, with 4 beaches nearby and five months warm enough to swim, where Skopje has none. It also has about three times as many museums, a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and 25% of surrounding land protected against 11% around Skopje.

Where they are alike

Families get much the same from both. The two put a comparable number of tourist attractions near the centre, and neither is built around children specifically: Skopje answers with more park space close in, Thessaloniki with 1 theme park within reach.

Both also reward walking, with their notable places clustered in the centre, Thessaloniki somewhat more so. And both share a long warm season: summer highs of 32°C and more than 2300 hours of sunshine a year.

Which traveller are you?

If you want to swim, it is Thessaloniki without argument: 4 beaches nearby, the sea at its warmest in August at 27°C, and a quarter of the land around the city protected for walking days.

If you are eating your way through a city and staying a while, Skopje suits you better, with a wider range of kitchens close in, more central park space, and North Macedonia's lower national price level.

If you are after museums and late nights, Thessaloniki again: about three times the museums, a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and far more bars and clubs, though only about half sit near the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €72 and €125, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A capital and a heavily visited port can each sit far from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so they tell you little about daily costs here.

Thessaloniki's beaches read well, but the sea is warmest in the same weeks the region hits 32°C and draws the most visitors. Its nightlife is spread out too, with only about half the drinking places near the centre, where Skopje's are concentrated close in.

Thessaloniki's season runs wider. July and August are its driest months at 21-23mm, with the sea at its warmest in August, and winter days hold near 10°C where Skopje sits closer to 5°C. December is the wettest month there.
