The verdict

Choose Milan if you want evenings out, a wide choice of restaurants and a centre with plenty within walking distance, plus the stronger option for children.

Choose Avignon if you want warmth and quiet: highs of 11-31°C across the year rather than 7-29°C, more protected countryside for day trips, and heritage reachable within a day.

Where they differ

Avignon runs warmer, with daytime highs of 11-31°C against Milan's 7-29°C, and it has dry months at 40mm or less where Milan has none. More land around it is protected, 36% against 30%, and it reaches 6 UNESCO-listed places on a day trip against Milan's 4.

Milan has many times as many bars and clubs, far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and much more for children: more attractions and park space near the centre, and more theme parks within reach.

Where they are alike

Neither is a place to swim. Milan has 4 beaches within reach and Avignon 1, and neither sees a month with sea at 21°C or more, so a swim means a deliberate trip out.

They also sit close on cost and on the shape of the year: the national daily budget estimates behind them are near each other, and both are warmest in July and coolest in January, so the seasonal calendar works the same way in both.

Which traveller are you?

If your evenings matter as much as your days, Milan: many times as many bars and clubs, and many times as many restaurants near the centre, though only about half its nightlife sits close in. Avignon's is concentrated but small.

Travelling with children, Milan again. Far more attractions and park space near the centre, and 5 theme parks within reach against Avignon's 4, with more of the sights close enough to walk between.

For museums in quantity, Milan. For a heritage trip built on day trips out, Avignon, which reaches 6 UNESCO-listed places against Milan's 4, in warmer weather and with more protected land around it.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €160 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. Neither tells you what a week in Avignon or Milan actually costs, and a large, heavily visited city can sit far enough from its country's average to swamp a gap that small.

Warmth and dryness do not arrive together. Avignon's September stays at 26°C but is among its wettest months, and Milan's warm May comes with heavy rain. A month that looks good on temperature alone can still be one you spend indoors.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Avignon: 1991-2020 normals, Nimes / Courbessac (34 km from centre). Milan: 1991-2020 normals, Novara / Cameri (41.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Avignon is at its best in late spring and early summer, with highs of 24°C in May and 28°C in June and rain around 44-58mm. July is drier still at 34mm, though days reach 31°C. September stays warm but rain climbs above 110mm.

Milan peaks later, in July and August at 29°C and 28°C. Its spring is wetter, above 100mm in May, and autumn heavier still, with November the wettest month of its year, so late summer is the safer window.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
