The verdict
Choose Barcelona if you want the sea within reach, a dense centre you can cross on foot, and a wide choice of places to eat and drink after dark; the water reaches 25°C in August.
Choose Bordeaux if the point of the trip is outside the city: far more protected land around it, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, with quieter evenings when you come back.

Where they differ
Barcelona is the one with a coast: 20 beaches nearby against Bordeaux's 4, and a sea that reaches 21°C or more in high summer. It also has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre.
Bordeaux's advantage is what surrounds it: 35% of the land around the city is protected against 10% around Barcelona, and it has 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Where they are alike
Nature and day trips is where the two land closest: each has about as much park space near the centre as the other, and both suit a day out by road or rail rather than putting open country at the end of the street.
They are close again on the calendar and on heritage. Both are warmest in August, at 29°C and 28°C, both coolest in January, and both have UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Which traveller are you?
If a beach day matters, Barcelona: 20 beaches nearby and a sea reaching 21°C or more in high summer, with the eating and drinking to fill the evening afterwards. Bordeaux has no comparable swimming.
Families are better served in Barcelona too: many more attractions near the centre, 3 theme parks within reach against Bordeaux's 1, and a similar amount of park space in both.
If you plan to spend days outside the city, Bordeaux: 35% of the land around it is protected, and 4 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach; the city works as a base rather than as the whole trip.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €122 and €160, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of Barcelona or Bordeaux. A heavily visited city can sit a long way from its country's average in either direction, so the gap between them says nothing reliable about which trip costs more.
Bordeaux's advantage outdoors is regional rather than local: the 35% of protected land sits around the city, and reaching it means transport and time. Barcelona's strongest beach months are also its warmest and its most popular, and its warm early-autumn months are its wettest.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Barcelona: 1991-2020 normals, Barcelona / Aeropuerto (14.4 km from centre). Bordeaux: 1991-2020 normals, Bordeaux / Merignac (9.5 km from centre).
Barcelona's clearest window is June and July: highs of 26-28°C, 27mm of rain in each month, and sea at 21-24°C. September and October stay warm but bring the heaviest rain of its year, 82-83mm, which makes early summer the safer bet for beach days.
Bordeaux is at its best in July and August, its driest and warmest stretch at 27-28°C with 47-57mm. November and December are the months to avoid, with 107-114mm of rain and highs of 11°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
