Where they differ
Belgrade is the bigger night out, with around three times as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most near the centre. It has about twice as many notable places within walking distance, twice the park space nearby, and 1 theme park where Ljubljana has none.
Ljubljana offers variety rather than volume: fewer restaurants, but a wider spread of kitchens. It also has more protected countryside, 13% of the surrounding land against 6%, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Where they are alike
Neither is a swimming destination. Both list roughly the same handful of beaches nearby, 10 near Ljubljana and 9 near Belgrade, and neither has a month with water at 21°C or more.
Heritage and day trips also come out close, in different forms. Belgrade holds far more museums; Ljubljana has more listed sites within reach of a day. Neither is ringed by much protected land, so the green space near the centre carries the weight.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone planning nights out should go to Belgrade. It has roughly three times as many places to drink as Ljubljana and many times as many clubs, and in both cities most sit near the centre, so evenings stay walkable.
Families are better served in Belgrade too: more tourist attractions near the centre and 1 theme park within reach, where Ljubljana has none. Summer highs of 30°C make outdoor days easier.
Walkers and day-trippers lean to Ljubljana. More than twice as much of the surrounding land is protected as around Belgrade, and 3 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach, and the range of kitchens is wider.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €99 for Serbia and €131 for Slovenia, are national price estimates for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A capital can sit further from its own country's average than these two figures sit from each other, so the gap says little about what a trip to either costs.
The beach counts are the other trap. Both list beaches nearby, but neither has a month with water at 21°C or more, so swimming is weather-dependent rather than a season. Warmth is not dryness either: neither city has a single month at 40mm or less, so rain belongs in the plan whenever you go.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Belgrade: 1991-2020 normals, Beograd (2.1 km from centre). Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre).
Belgrade has the longer window. May to September runs 24-30°C with rain mostly 55-72mm, apart from a wetter June at 95mm; October still reaches 19°C and stays drier than anything Ljubljana offers that month.
Ljubljana peaks narrowly in July and August at 28°C, and it is wet even then, 121-124mm. Autumn closes in fast: September brings 159mm and October 150mm with highs of 16°C, so the shoulder months that still work in Belgrade are not the same trip here.
