Where they differ

Ljubljana packs many times as many notable places into walking distance of the centre, and offers a wider range of kitchens, with about twice as many restaurants near the centre. Places to drink and clubs outnumber Rovinj's many times over. For day trips, 13% of the land around Ljubljana is protected against 2% around Rovinj, with more UNESCO-listed places in reach.

Rovinj answers with the coast: 55 beaches nearby against Ljubljana's 10, sea at 26°C in August, and 3 theme parks within reach where Ljubljana has none.

Where they are alike

Value for money is where they sit closest. The national price levels behind them are near enough to each other, €131 a day for Ljubljana's country and €138 for Rovinj's, that cost is unlikely to decide this.

Both peak in July, at 28°C and 29°C, and neither has a dry month: no month in either falls to 40mm or less. Families are a modest draw in both, each with a different partial answer.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Rovinj has 3 theme parks within reach and 55 beaches nearby, while Ljubljana counters with more attractions and far more park space near the centre. Neither is a standout, so decide by sea or city.

Culture and eating: Ljubljana, clearly. Many times as many museums, about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, all in a centre where the notable places sit within walking distance.

Swimming: Rovinj. Four months of sea at 21°C or more, peaking at 26°C in August, and a run of beaches Ljubljana cannot match. Nightlife is thin, so plan quiet evenings.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate, €131 for Ljubljana's country and €138 for Rovinj's, not a measurement of either town. A capital and a heavily visited coastal town can each sit well away from their national average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so the near-tie says nothing about which trip costs more.

Rovinj's beach appeal lands in the same few months as its warm sea, in a town of 13,000 people, so the season concentrates into a narrow window. And Ljubljana's warmest months are also among its wettest, above 120mm, so warm does not mean dry in either place.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

WorseBetter

Ljubljana is at its best from June to August, with highs of 26-28°C, though these are also wet months at 121-126mm, and September is wetter still at 159mm. May, at 22°C and 114mm, is the quieter shoulder.

Rovinj holds up longer. July and August bring 29°C with sea at 25-26°C, and July is the driest of its summer at 61mm; September still gives 24°C and warm sea. Winter is milder, near 9-10°C, though November runs to 125mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
