The verdict

Choose Berlin if you want the wider city: far more museums, and a night out that runs well beyond the centre, with most of the notable places close enough to walk between.

Choose Dresden if you prefer a smaller city of 565,000 people, slightly warmer days topping out at 26°C, and are content with a compact centre where the bars and clubs sit together.

Where they differ

Berlin has many times as many places to drink and about three times as many nightclubs as Dresden, spread across the city rather than clustered near the centre. It also has about three times as many museums, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Dresden's 1, and many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre.

Dresden runs slightly warmer through the year, with highs of 4-26°C against Berlin's 4-25°C, and has 22 beaches nearby against 17.

Where they are alike

Neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, and swimming is not the reason to visit either; the nearby beach counts are close, 22 for Dresden and 17 for Berlin.

Their weather tracks closely: January highs of 4°C in both, July the warmest month in each. Both offer a good range of places to eat, with Dresden's kitchens a little more varied, and a comparable amount of protected land within day-trip reach.

Which traveller are you?

Families are better served in Berlin: about twice as many attractions and twice as much park space near the centre, and 5 theme parks within reach against Dresden's 2.

Museum-focused travellers should also pick Berlin, with roughly three times as many museums and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Dresden's 1, plus most sights close enough to walk between.

Anyone wanting a quiet weekend will find Dresden calmer: fewer bars and clubs, and those it has sit near the centre, with slightly warmer days peaking at 26°C in July and August.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it says nothing about which of the two is cheaper. The daily budget of €163 beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of either city, and costs in a city of 3.8 million people are worth checking directly.

The warmest months are also the wettest: July in Berlin and August in Dresden top the year for rain, so a warm week can still be an indoor one. Berlin's lead in nightlife also comes spread well beyond the centre, meaning transport late at night rather than a short walk.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Berlin: 1991-2020 normals, Berlin / Alexanderplatz (0.9 km from centre). Dresden: 1991-2020 normals, Dresden-Strehlen (3.8 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Berlin's steadiest stretch is May to September, with highs of 20-25°C and rainfall near 50mm in most of those months; August holds 25°C with 53mm against 83mm in Dresden, which makes late summer the clearer case for Berlin.

Dresden is the better pick either side of summer: February and March are drier, at 31mm and 36mm, and April reaches 17°C. Its July peak of 26°C comes with 80mm, so the heat and the rain arrive together.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
