The verdict
Choose Berlin if you want museums and heritage, nightlife that runs well beyond the centre, and a core where most of the notable places are within walking distance. It also runs a little warmer through the year.
Choose Gdansk if you want the sea within reach: 20 beaches nearby and water that turns swimmable in late summer, with a smaller centre and quieter evenings.

Where they differ
Berlin has many times as many bars and clubs as Gdansk, and they are spread well beyond the centre rather than clustered in it. It also packs many more notable places into walking distance of the middle, along with many times as many museums and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2.
Gdansk is the one with a coast: 20 beaches nearby against Berlin's 17, and sea reaching 19°C in August. What nightlife it has sits close to the centre, walkable in an evening.
Where they are alike
Both suit families. Gdansk has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre, Berlin about twice as much park space and more theme parks within reach, so each fills a day with children differently rather than better.
Their surroundings and their weather are close as well. 20% of the land around Berlin is protected against 12% around Gdansk, and both get 3 months at 40mm or less of rain, with cold winters and summers that stay mild.
Which traveller are you?
If you are going for museums and long evenings, Berlin. It has many times the bars and clubs, spread well beyond the centre, many times the museums, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Travelling with children, either works. Gdansk puts about twice as many attractions near the centre and adds beaches within reach; Berlin answers with about twice the park space and 5 theme parks against Gdansk's 3.
If the point of the trip is swimming, Gdansk, though it is a qualified yes: 20 beaches nearby, and a sea that only nears 19°C in August. Berlin has no coast at all.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budgets, €163 for Germany and €133 for Poland, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Berlin or Gdansk. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own national average than these two figures sit from each other, so treat the gap as background, not as a reason to pick one.
Gdansk's beach standing rests on a short season: neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more, and Gdansk's warmest water arrives in August, one of its wettest months. Berlin's nightlife is spread well beyond the centre, which means travelling between places rather than walking.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Berlin: 1991-2020 normals, Berlin / Alexanderplatz (0.9 km from centre). Gdansk: 1991-2020 normals, Gdansk-Rebiechowo (12.7 km from centre).
Berlin is at its best from June to August, with highs of 23-25°C, and it works earlier too: April is its driest month at 29mm and May already reaches 20°C while Gdansk is still colder and slower to warm.
Gdansk is the pick in July and August, the only months with sea near 19°C and highs of 22°C. They are also its wettest, close to 80mm each, and September stays wet, so plan around showers.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
