Bled or Budapest?

Neither place has a sea, but in Bled swimming is part of daily life. The lake warms to about 24°C in high summer. You can walk to the lidos below the castle or slip into the water from the rocks along the shore path, and the colder Lake Bohinj is close by.

In Budapest, summer swimming means the strand, an open-air lido with lawns and pools, and Palatinus on Margaret Island is the classic one. For open water you take the train to Lake Velence or make the long trip to Balaton, so a swim becomes a day out.

Budapest is the place to eat well. Goulash, chicken paprikash and lángos, the stalls of the Great Market Hall, layered cakes in the old coffee houses and wine from Tokaj, Eger and Balaton give you a week of good meals.

Bled has enough for a day or two: kremšnita on a lakeside terrace, and trout and žlikrofi in the inns, with much of the rest aimed at day visitors. The better cooking is out in the farm inns of the surrounding valleys, which is worth knowing if you have a car.

Bled has a few memorable sights, the castle on its cliff and the island church reached by pletna boat, and most people have seen them all within a day.

Budapest is on another scale entirely. The Danube panorama from Parliament to the Royal Palace, Andrássy Avenue, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Dohány Street Synagogue and history running from Ottoman tombs to Memento Park need several days. Even then, plenty is left unseen.

This is where the two differ most. An evening in Bled means a drink on a terrace and a walk along the lit shore, and the village is quiet well before midnight. In Budapest, the ruin bars of District VII, the late clubs on Kazinczy and Király streets and the summer garden bars go on past 2am at weekends, and the wine bars of District V are there for a calmer night.

Bled has a clear lead here. It is the gateway to Triglav National Park, with the Vintgar Gorge, Lake Bohinj, the Pokljuka plateau and the Vršič pass into the Soča valley all close by. Activities range from lakeside strolls and rowing to canyoning, paragliding and skiing in winter.

Budapest's outdoors is gentler but close to the centre. There are forest walks in the Buda Hills, reached by cogwheel railway, cave tours beneath them, and the hiking trails and riverside cycle path of the Danube Bend about an hour north. It gives you green space and a break from the city, but not mountains.

Both make good bases for day trips, but the trips are different in kind. From Bled you mix scenery and towns across a small country and over its borders: Ljubljana is under an hour away, and there is medieval Radovljica, the Postojna cave, Piran on the Adriatic and the Austrian lakes through the Karawanks tunnel. Some of these are easier by car.

Budapest's outings are mostly historic towns, many reachable by suburban train. Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom line the Danube Bend, Gödöllő has its royal palace, and further out are the castle and wine cellars of Eger and the village of Hollókő.

Families do about equally well in both, in different ways. Bled is an outdoor village. Children can row to the island, ring the church bell, splash in the shallow lidos, ride the toboggan run on Straža and walk the gorge walkways, but there is little to fall back on when it rains.

Budapest has the indoor and city attractions Bled lacks: one of Europe's oldest zoos, the Palace of Wonders science centre and the Children's Railway, plus lidos with slides in summer. The trade-off is metro stairs and crowded central pavements.

Bled is simple within the village, with a compact centre and a shore path linking everything around the lake. Going further is harder. Buses reach Ljubljana and Bohinj, and trains stop a few kilometres away, but trailheads, Pokljuka and the Soča valley are poorly served, so most people exploring the Alps hire a car and then struggle to park by the lake in summer.

Budapest is far easier to get around without one. Pest is flat and easy to walk, the trams that circle the Grand Boulevard run day and night, and tram 2 doubles as a sightseeing ride along the river past Parliament. The short metro includes the historic line under Andrássy Avenue, and the funicular and buses climb to the Castle District on the steeper Buda side.

Bled has almost nothing beyond lakeside stalls selling honey, lace and painted beehive panels. Budapest is not a shopping destination either, but it has real things to buy: Herend and Zsolnay porcelain, paprika and Tokaji from the Great Market Hall, small design boutiques in Districts V and VII, and the Ecseri flea market for communist-era finds.

Budapest is the cheaper stay. Public transport, wine and the ordinary coffee houses cost little, and good mid-range rooms within walking distance of the centre are easy to find, as long as you avoid the restaurants around Váci utca.

Bled costs more because it is a resort. Lakeside hotels and terraces charge for the view, and rooms are scarce in July and August. Its main attractions, the shore path, the viewpoints and the mountain trails, are free, and staying in Radovljica or Bohinj brings the bill down.

Bled has no theatre or concert hall, only occasional summer concerts and folk evenings put on for visitors, so for a proper performance you go to Ljubljana. Budapest has music most nights: opera on Andrássy Avenue, orchestral and chamber concerts at the Liszt Academy and Müpa, operetta and folk dance, and tickets are easy to get. Spoken theatre there is in Hungarian, so for visitors it is mostly music and dance.

Both places have a history of taking the waters, but Budapest's is in another league. Bled grew up as a nineteenth-century health resort. Its calm today comes from the still lake, early-morning walks and a few hotel spas fed by mild springs, which outside visitors can only sometimes use.

In Budapest, the thermal baths are part of everyday life: the steaming outdoor pools of the Széchenyi, the mosaics of the Gellért and the Ottoman domes of Rudas and Király. An afternoon moving between hot pools, saunas and cold plunges is a reason to go in itself.
