The verdict
Choose Genoa if swimming matters and you want a city around you: 37 beaches nearby, four months of sea warm enough to use them, and far more restaurants, bars and museums close to the centre than Bled offers.
Choose Bled if you want a small, quiet base with protected countryside on the doorstep and day trips to UNESCO-listed places, and you can do without a coast and without mild winters.

Where they differ
Bled's advantage is the land around it: 20% is protected against 8% around Genoa, day trips reach 3 UNESCO-listed places against Genoa's 1, and there is a theme park within reach where Genoa has none.
Genoa leads on the things you use daily: 37 beaches nearby against Bled's 3, sea reaching 25°C at its warmest, many times as many bars and clubs, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre.
Where they are alike
Open country is where the two come closest, by different routes: a much larger share of protected land around Bled, and about three times as much park space near the centre in Genoa. Either way, walking and days out are part of the trip.
Cost lands close too, with national price estimates for restaurants and hotels of €131 and €155, country figures rather than measurements of either city. Peak summer warmth is comparable as well, topping out at 27°C in Bled and 28°C in Genoa.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming is the point of the trip, take Genoa: 37 beaches nearby and four months of sea at 21°C or more, against a lake town with no sea season at all.
Walkers and quiet-seekers should take Bled. 20% of the surrounding land is protected, day trips reach 3 UNESCO-listed places, and nightlife is close to absent, which may be the reason to go.
Families split. Genoa has far more tourist attractions and park space near the centre, plus the beaches; Bled has a theme park within reach where Genoa has none, and much less ground to cover.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €131 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either place. A much-visited lake town can sit well above its own national average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so neither is shown here to be the cheaper trip.
Warm and dry are not the same month: Bled's warmest months are also its wettest, peaking near 139mm. Genoa's beach advantage is concentrated in exactly the months when its coast is busiest, and its sea sits below swimming warmth for most of the year.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bled: 1991-2020 normals, Klagenfurt (35.5 km from centre). Genoa: 1991-2020 normals, Genova / Sestri (6.7 km from centre).
Bled works from June to September, when highs run 25-27°C. Those are also its wettest months, above 100mm each, so pack for rain, and the shoulder either side is cool while winter is properly cold.
Genoa is the stronger summer pick: July and August are its driest months, 12-20mm, with highs of 27-28°C and the sea at its warmest. Autumn brings the rain, November near 122mm, though its winters stay mild in a way Bled's are not.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
