The verdict

Choose Bled if the trip is walking and looking: more of the land around it protected, more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and evenings that stay quiet.

Choose La Spezia if you want to swim: 32 beaches nearby and a sea season running from June to September, with far more restaurants and bars near the centre.

Where they differ

Bled concentrates its interest: about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre. 20% of the surrounding land is protected against 13% around La Spezia, and one more UNESCO-listed site sits within day-trip reach.

La Spezia has the coast: 32 beaches against Bled's 3, and four months of sea at 21°C or more, against none in Bled. It also has many times as many restaurants and places to drink near the centre, and about three times the park space.

Where they are alike

For families, both are thin. La Spezia has about three times as much park space near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach against Bled's 1; Bled counters with more tourist attractions close to the centre. Neither stands out.

The national price levels behind them are close, €131 and €155 a day, so cost is unlikely to decide it. Eating out is limited in both: La Spezia has far more restaurants, Bled a wider range of kitchens.

Which traveller are you?

If swimming decides the trip, La Spezia is the only candidate: 32 beaches within reach and a sea season of four months. Bled has nothing comparable and no swimming season at all.

Walkers and sightseers who want things close together should take Bled: more notable places within walking distance of the centre, 20% of the land around it protected, and more UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach.

For evenings out, La Spezia is the clearer choice, with many times as many restaurants and places to drink near the centre. Bled's nightlife is close to nonexistent, though its kitchens cover a somewhat wider range.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national estimates, not measurements of either city. A small town and a larger city can each sit far from their national average, by more than the gap between €131 and €155, so cost should not settle the choice.

La Spezia's beach advantage covers the same weeks everyone else travels: the sea is warm only in high summer, which is when the coast is busiest, and the quieter months either side are the wet ones. Bled has the mirror problem: its strongest months are also its wettest, so good weather there is an average, not a promise.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bled: 1991-2020 normals, Klagenfurt (35.5 km from centre). La Spezia: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (64.8 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bled is at its best from June to August, when highs run 25-27°C, but that is also its wettest stretch at 108-139mm a month, so showers should be planned around. May is the drier alternative at 86mm and still comfortable for walking.

La Spezia reverses this: its hottest months are also its driest, with July and August at 30°C and only 32-35mm, which is when the swimming is best. From September rain climbs above 100mm a month into late autumn, while winter highs stay well above Bled's.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
