Bled or Zagreb?

Bled has real summer swimming. The lake warms to around 24°C, and you can go in from the lidos below the castle, at the shallow western end or from the rocks along the path. Strong swimmers head out to the island, and Lake Bohinj, half an hour away, is a colder, wilder option.

Zagreb's Jarun and Bundek lakes are where locals cool off on a hot afternoon, not a reason to visit. Neither city is near the sea: from either one the Adriatic is about two hours away.

Bled's food is limited: kremšnita on a lake terrace, trout and žlikrofi at a few inns, and hotel dining rooms and pizzerias aimed at day visitors. The best meals are out in the valley farm inns.

Zagreb gives you much more to eat. There is Dolac market in the morning, then štrukli, turkey with mlinci and Zagorje sausages, with wines from Plešivica and Slavonia. The café terraces around Flower Square are a pleasure in their own right. Fine dining is thin in both places.

You can see all of Bled's sights in a day: the castle on its cliff with a small museum and printing workshop, the pletna boat to the island church and its wishing bell, and the old spa villas along the shore. They are memorable mainly for their setting.

Zagreb is a real city to explore. The medieval Upper Town of Gradec and Kaptol, the Austro-Hungarian Lower Town around the Green Horseshoe, the Mimara and Strossmayer collections, the Museum of Broken Relationships and the arcaded Mirogoj cemetery fill two unhurried days.

Bled goes to bed early. A drink on a hotel or café terrace and a walk along the lit shore is the whole evening, and there are no clubs. Zagreb has a real night out, though a relaxed one: it starts at the café-bars of Tkalčićeva, moves on to cocktail and craft beer bars around Flower Square and, in summer, ends at the lakeside clubs at Jarun.

Bled has the mountains on its doorstep. The level lake circuit, the steep climbs to Ojstrica and Osojnica, the Vintgar Gorge and Triglav National Park offer everything from easy strolls to hikes between mountain huts. There is also rafting on the Sava, paragliding, and skiing at Vogel and on Pokljuka in winter.

Zagreb's outdoors are gentler. There are the beech woods of Medvednica, reached by tram and bus, the oak woods and lakes of Maksimir, and cycling along the Sava. Plitvice is a long day trip to the south, and there is no high mountain country nearby.

From Bled you can reach more of a country in a day. Ljubljana is under an hour away, and Radovljica and the old forging village of Kropa are close by. The Postojna cave with Predjama Castle and the harbour town of Piran each make a full day, and the Wörthersee in Austria is just through the Karawanks tunnel.

Zagreb's surroundings are pleasant rather than striking: Trakošćan and the other Zagorje castles, baroque Varaždin, Samobor and Karlovac's star-shaped fortress. Ljubljana can be done from here too, but at a little over two hours away it makes a long day.

Bled is better for children who like being outside. They can row to the island and ring the bell, swim from the shallow lidos, ride the toboggan run and try the rope park on Straža, and older children can manage the Vintgar walkways. Its weak spot is a wet day, because there is nothing indoors to fall back on.

Zagreb has what Bled lacks in bad weather: the zoo in Maksimir, the Tesla Technical Museum with its old trams and mock mine, and the short funicular. It suits a few relaxed days rather than a trip spent mostly in the open air.

Bled is easy to get around on foot, with the shoreline path linking everything, and buses and two railway stations connect it to Ljubljana and Bohinj. The Alps it is famous for are harder to reach: Pokljuka, the Vršič pass and the Soča valley usually mean hiring a car.

Zagreb is simpler without a car. The centre is walkable, the blue trams cover the city in a dense web, and a tram and bus will take you to Medvednica. Only Zagorje and Plitvice really need a car.

Bled has almost nothing to buy beyond honey, lace and painted beehive panels from the lakeside stalls. Zagreb isn't a shopping destination either, but Ilica, the malls, Dolac and the Sunday flea market at Britanski trg cover everyday needs and the classic souvenirs, from licitar hearts to Croatian neckties.

Bled costs more because it is a resort, especially in July and August when lakeside rooms are scarce, and the boat, castle and gorge tickets add up. Staying in Radovljica, in Bohinj or at the campsite brings the bill down, and the trails and viewpoints are free.

Zagreb is the cheaper stay. Central apartments, trams, museums and market food are all reasonably priced, although upmarket restaurants and the best hotels cost close to what they would in Western Europe.

Bled has no theatre or concert hall, only occasional summer concerts and folk evenings put on for visitors. Zagreb has a full season of its own: opera and ballet at the ochre Croatian National Theatre, the Zagreb Philharmonic at the Lisinski hall, the Zagreb Soloists in churches and open-air concerts in Upper Town courtyards in summer. Much of the spoken theatre is in Croatian.

Bled grew up as a health resort and still feels like one. The lakeside hotel spas use the mild spring water at the eastern end, and some let in day guests. Outside high summer, early walks around the still lake set a slow pace.

Zagreb's spas in town are mostly hotel wellness floors. For a proper soak you drive about an hour into Zagorje to the thermal pools at Tuheljske, Krapinske or Stubičke Toplice. Within the city, the calm comes from long café mornings and shaded parks.
