Where they differ

Bled's advantage is what lies outside it: 20% of the surrounding land is protected against 9% around Zagreb, three UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach where Zagreb has none, and there is one theme park within reach.

Zagreb is the stronger city in itself: many times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, and far more notable places within walking distance. Its museums, about three times Bled's, cluster near the centre too.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, and the water is inland: 3 beaches around Bled, 8 near Zagreb.

They are closer on day trips, climate and price. Both have country worth a day out, Bled through protected land, Zagreb through park space near the centre; both swing sharply between summer and winter; and the national budget estimates behind them, €131 and €138 a day, sit close together.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €131 and €138, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices for each country, not measurements of Bled or Zagreb. A capital and a town of a few thousand people can each sit well away from their national average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so nothing here shows one city to cost more than the other.

The strongest months are also the wettest: Bled's August brings 139mm and Zagreb's September 104mm, so a good month is not a dry one. And the beaches counted here are inland water, with no month of sea warmth behind them.
