The verdict

Choose Bodrum if the trip is built around swimming and warm weather: many more beaches than Istanbul, a longer stretch of sea above 21°C and warmer days year round.

Choose Istanbul if you want to walk between sights: far denser notable places near the centre, many more museums, more to do with children and a much wider choice of restaurants and bars.

Where they differ

Bodrum is the swimming trip, with 30 beaches nearby against Istanbul's 2, and the sea stays at 21°C or more for longer. It also runs warmer through the year, 14-31°C against 9-30°C, and a larger share of the land around it is protected.

Istanbul packs many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, has many times as many museums, and 1 UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach. It also holds far more attractions and park space for children, and many more bars and clubs.

Where they are alike

Neither is a base for countryside excursions. Protected land is a small share of the surroundings in both cases, 5% around Bodrum and 1% around Istanbul.

Both peak in August, at 31°C in Bodrum and 30°C in Istanbul, with the sea at its warmest in the same month, and both are coolest in January. On food, the two offer a similar range of kitchens, even if Istanbul has many more places serving it.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers and sunbathers should take Bodrum. It has far more beaches than Istanbul, the sea reaches 25°C in August, and it stays above 21°C for five months.

Anyone travelling for museums and old buildings should take Istanbul. It has many times as many museums, the densest cluster of notable places near the centre, and 1 UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach.

Families are better served in Istanbul too, with many more attractions and park space near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach against Bodrum's 1. Late-night drinkers will also find far more choice there.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both cities by construction, so it tells you nothing about which of these two is cheaper. The daily budget of €100 beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of Bodrum or Istanbul, and real costs will turn on season and neighbourhood.

No weather station near Bodrum records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and its monthly weather picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. Its 30 beaches also say nothing about how crowded they are in July and August, when rainfall drops to 0mm.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bodrum: 1993-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Kos Airport (42.7 km from centre). Istanbul: 1991-2020 normals, Istanbul / Goztepe (9.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bodrum's best window is September into early October: highs of 28°C, sea at 24°C and only 12mm of rain in September. May and June work too, dry and 24-28°C, with the sea from 19°C. Winter is wet, with 140-147mm in December and January.

Istanbul suits June to August, 27-30°C and 23-29mm of rain. Its shoulder months are cooler, 17°C in April and 21°C in October, and October brings 85mm of rain.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
