The verdict

Choose Bruges if you want a compact trip on foot, with more attractions and park space close to the centre, more restaurants and a wider spread of kitchens, and museums grouped tightly around the middle of town.

Choose Maastricht if you would rather have countryside and days out by car: far more of the land around it is protected, and 5 theme parks sit within reach.

Where they differ

Bruges is the stronger base for filling days on foot near the centre: about three times as many tourist attractions as Maastricht, somewhat more restaurants and a wider range of kitchens, somewhat more museums, and they sit tightly around the centre.

Maastricht turns outward. 19% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Bruges, there are 5 theme parks within reach against Bruges's 1, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip range against 3.

Where they are alike

Cost is where they sit closest. The national daily-budget estimates, €180 for Belgium and €181 for the Netherlands, are all but identical, so the country price level for restaurants and hotels points neither way.

The weather is close too: both are coolest in January at 6°C and warm rather than hot in summer. Museums, places to drink and the number of notable places you can walk to all fall in the same bracket, with most nightlife near the centre in each.

Which traveller are you?

Families with young children: Bruges for a car-free trip, with about three times as many attractions near the centre as Maastricht and more park space. Maastricht suits a driving holiday, with 5 theme parks within reach against Bruges's 1.

Museum-minded walkers: Bruges, where the museums cluster around the centre and more notable places sit within walking distance, so days need no transport. Maastricht answers with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 3.

Walkers and cyclists: Maastricht, where far more of the surrounding land is protected and 6 beaches sit nearby, though neither city offers warm swimming. Bruges keeps its green space in town parks instead.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily-budget figures, €180 and €181, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit further from its country's average than these two figures sit from each other, so they say nothing about which trip costs more.

The beach count is the other trap: Maastricht has more of them, but no sea temperature is recorded there, and neither city gets a month of sea at 21°C or more, so these are shores to sit on rather than swim from. Summer is also the wet half of the year in both.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bruges: 1991-2020 normals, Vlissingen (37.4 km from centre). Maastricht: 1991-2020 normals, Maastricht Airport Zuid Limburg (10 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bruges is at its best in July and August, at 22°C, with the sea at its warmest, 19°C, at the end of that stretch. April is its driest month at 35mm, and autumn turns steadily wetter.

Maastricht runs warmer in high summer at 24°C, though its wettest month falls there too, at 84mm. Early autumn favours it: 20°C with 58mm in September, drier than Bruges at that point. Midwinter is cold and wet in both, so neither is a winter pick.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
