Where they differ
Antwerp has about three times as many restaurants near the centre as Bruges, and a wider range of kitchens. It also has about three times as many places to drink and far more nightclubs. It has somewhat more museums, 9 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Bruges's 3, and about twice as many notable places within walking distance.
Bruges has about three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, which makes it the simpler city with children, though Antwerp has 3 theme parks within reach against Bruges's 1.
Where they are alike
Both share the same cool, damp maritime climate: daytime highs of 7-23°C in Antwerp and 6-22°C in Bruges, with rain falling in every month, so outdoor plans depend on the summer half of the year.
Each has one beach nearby and neither gets a month with the sea warm enough for comfortable swimming, so neither works as a seaside trip. Countryside is thin in both cases, and near the centre the two offer much the same park space.
Which traveller are you?
If you are going for dinners and evenings out, Antwerp: about three times as many restaurants and drinking places near the centre as Bruges, a wider spread of kitchens, and far more nightclubs, most of them walkable.
Travelling with children, Bruges: roughly three times as many tourist attractions close to the centre, all within a small area. Antwerp answers with more theme parks within reach, but those need a trip out.
For a quiet short break, Bruges: fewer late-night venues, more sunshine across the year, and a drier spring, with 35mm in April. Museum-minded visitors will find more to work through in Antwerp.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two cities carries no information: it is a national price level, identical for both by construction. The daily budget of €180 beside it is a single national estimate rather than a measurement of either place, so it tells you nothing about which of the two costs less.
Some figures reach beyond the city itself. Antwerp's UNESCO-listed sites and its theme parks lie within day-trip reach rather than in town, and its larger share of protected land describes the wider region; near the centre both have much the same park space. Summer rates best in both and is also their wettest stretch, so a strong month is not a dry one.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Antwerp: 1991-2020 normals, Antwerpen / Deurne (5.2 km from centre). Bruges: 1991-2020 normals, Vlissingen (37.4 km from centre).
Antwerp runs slightly warmer and peaks at 23°C in midsummer, but that is also its wettest stretch, at 80-90mm. September is the better compromise, 20°C and 67mm.
Bruges is the drier choice in spring: April brings 35mm against Antwerp's 47mm, at 13°C, and it sees more sunshine across the year. In high summer it sits at 22°C with 74-79mm, marginally drier than Antwerp. Winter in either is dark and damp, with rain in every month and little reason to be outdoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
