Where they differ

Bucharest has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens. It has about three times as many bars and clubs, though about half sit near the centre. For families it is the clearer choice: many more attractions near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach, against none at Plovdiv.

Plovdiv is more compact: most of its bars and its museums sit close to the centre, so less of the day goes on getting about. It also runs slightly warmer, 5-31°C against 3-31°C.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Beaches are scarce in both, and neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so plan around the city rather than the water.

They are also close on day trips and on climate: protected land covers 5% of the area around Plovdiv and 4% around Bucharest, park space near the two centres is comparable, and both peak in August at 31°C.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children, choose Bucharest. It has many more attractions near the centre than Plovdiv and 2 theme parks within reach where Plovdiv has none, with a comparable amount of park space near each centre.

For eating out and late nights, Bucharest again: about twice as many restaurants near the centre, a wider range of kitchens, and roughly three times as many bars and clubs, though they are spread more widely.

If you would rather walk everywhere, Plovdiv suits better. Its museums and most of its bars sit near the centre, and the surrounding area holds slightly more protected land, 5% against 4%.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget, €99 for Bucharest's country and €77 for Plovdiv's, is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel price levels, not a measurement of either city. A capital and a heavily visited city can each sit well away from its own national average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so treat it as background rather than as what your trip will cost.

The warm months read best on paper but are not uniformly comfortable: Bucharest's strongest late-spring stretch carries its heaviest rain, and Plovdiv's driest month is also its hottest, at 31°C.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bucharest: 1991-2020 normals, Bucuresti / Imh (10 km from centre). Plovdiv: 1997-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Plovdiv (1.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bucharest is strongest in May and again in September, when highs sit at 24-25°C. Its early summer is the wet part of the year, with 71-82mm in May and June, so September, at 62mm, is the steadier choice.

Plovdiv holds up better into high summer: August is its driest month at 25mm with highs of 31°C, and September stays warm too. Winter is where it loses ground, with December the wettest at 81mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
