Where they differ
Plovdiv has about three times as much park space near the centre as Thessaloniki, and a somewhat wider range of kitchens among its restaurants.
Thessaloniki is the coastal option, with 4 beaches nearby against Plovdiv's 1, and sea at 21°C or more for five months of the year. A quarter of the land around it is protected against 5% around Plovdiv, and it has about three times as many places to drink, though only about half of them are near the centre.
Where they are alike
Eating out is close. Thessaloniki has about twice as many restaurants near the centre, but Plovdiv's range of kitchens is somewhat wider, so neither leaves you short of choice.
The two also run close on weather, museums and families. Both are warm in summer and manageable in winter, with January highs of 5°C in Plovdiv and 10°C in Thessaloniki. Museum holdings are moderate in both, and each gives families something: parks in Plovdiv, attractions and 1 theme park in Thessaloniki.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone whose trip revolves around swimming should go to Thessaloniki. It has 4 beaches nearby and sea reaching 27°C in August, while Plovdiv is inland and offers nothing comparable.
For a night out, Thessaloniki has far more places to drink and roughly twice as many clubs, but they are spread out. Plovdiv's are concentrated near the centre, so an evening stays walkable.
Families will find more organised things to do in Thessaloniki, with about three times as many attractions near the centre and 1 theme park within reach. Plovdiv answers with much more park space close in, which suits slower days with small children.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €77 and €125, are national estimates for the two countries, covering restaurant and hotel price levels rather than either city. A heavily visited city can sit well away from its own national average, and that gap can exceed the gap between the two countries, so read these as country context rather than a comparison of the two cities.
Thessaloniki's coastal advantage peaks exactly when it is hottest, with the sea warmest in August and highs of 32°C, which is also when beaches are busiest. Its protected land lies around the city, so day trips need transport.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Plovdiv: 1997-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Plovdiv (1.2 km from centre). Thessaloniki: 1991-2020 normals, Thessaloniki Airport (14 km from centre).
Plovdiv is at its best from May to September, with highs of 24-31°C and August the driest month at 25mm. Winter is the weak point, with January highs near 5°C and 60-65mm of rain in most cold months.
Thessaloniki works over a longer stretch. May, June and September are the strongest, with highs of 25-30°C and sea at 19-25°C. Rain stays at 40mm or less through most of the year, so shoulder-season trips are drier than in Plovdiv.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
