Where they differ
Budapest has many times as many restaurants near the centre, and both cover a similar range of kitchens. It also has about three times as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most near the centre, plus many times as many attractions aimed at families and 1 theme park within reach.
Ljubljana answers with 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Budapest's 1, museums grouped tightly around the centre, and 13% protected land nearby against 8%.
Where they are alike
Neither city is a swimming destination. Ljubljana has 10 beaches nearby and Budapest 6, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so water is an occasional inland detour rather than a reason to book.
They also sit close on days out of the city, on year-round weather, with both running daytime highs of about 4-28°C, and on heritage, where each keeps museums within walking distance of the centre.
Which traveller are you?
Families are better served in Budapest: many times as many attractions near the centre, more park space within walking reach, and 1 theme park within range where Ljubljana has none.
Anyone travelling for eating and late nights should also take Budapest, with many times as many restaurants near the centre and far more places to drink, most of them walkable.
Walkers and day-trippers do better from Ljubljana, where 13% of the surrounding land is protected against 8%, and 3 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against Budapest's 1.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €104 in Budapest's country against €131 in Ljubljana's, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its own country average than these two figures sit from each other, so neither reading tells you which trip will cost more.
Ljubljana's larger count of nearby beaches is not sea swimming: neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more. Budapest's counts of restaurants, bars and attractions describe how much is packed near the centre, which in the warm months also means how many people are in it.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Budapest: 1991-2020 normals, Budapest Met Center (2.1 km from centre). Ljubljana: 1991-2020 normals, Ljubljana / Bezigrad (1.9 km from centre).
Budapest is the steadier choice from May to September: highs of 22-28°C, and 48-75mm of rain in the warmest months, with drier spring and autumn on either side. Winter is bare, and the shoulder months are the ones to pick if you want dry pavements.
Ljubljana matches the summer heat, 28°C at its peak, but not the dryness: over 120mm in each summer month, and its wettest stretch in September and October, above 150mm. Budapest has 5 months at 40mm or less; Ljubljana none.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
