Where they differ
Catania is the better base for getting out of the city: 10% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Venice, and the weather co-operates, with daytime highs of 16-35°C across the year against Venice's 8-30°C, and more genuinely dry months to plan around.
Venice concentrates far more into walking range: many times as many notable places within a short walk of the centre, considerably more tourist attractions near it, somewhat more park space, and 3 theme parks within reach against Catania's 1.
Where they are alike
Neither city is defined by its restaurants. Venice has somewhat more of them near the centre, Catania a somewhat wider range of kitchens, and in both you eat well without that being the reason to come.
Both warm to a sea temperature of 26°C in August, so swimming works on either coast in late summer. Nightlife is modest in each, and what exists sits near the centre, so evenings stay within walking distance of where you sleep.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone travelling for museums and monuments should pick Venice: roughly twice as many museums as Catania, 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 3, and most of the notable sights inside a short walk of the centre.
Swimmers can go either way. Catania puts the sea 1km from the centre and keeps it above 21°C for longer; Venice has far more beaches to choose from, but they sit 4km out.
If evenings matter more than mornings, Catania has about twice as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most of them central, plus more protected land for days spent outside the city.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information: that figure is a national price level and is identical for both by construction. The €155 daily budget beside it is a single national estimate rather than a measurement of either city, so read it as a guide to the country, not to Catania or Venice.
Venice's beach lead counts what is nearby rather than what is outside your door: the water sits 4km from the centre, and the swimming season is shorter. Catania's driest months are also its hottest, at 34-35°C at the peak, while Venice's warmest stretch is not its driest, with autumn rain reaching 106mm.
When should you go?

Catania's best window is May and June, with highs of 26-31°C and only 11-18mm of rain. July and August turn hot at 34-35°C. October is the other good bet, still 26°C with the sea at 23°C, though rain climbs to 51mm.
Venice is at its best from June to August at 28-30°C, but rain stays present at 65-75mm and autumn brings 106mm in the wettest month. Winter is a different city, with January highs of 8°C.
