The verdict

Choose Cologne if you want a city that fills a trip without a car: many museums, a wide range of kitchens, bars and clubs near the centre, and 6 theme parks within reach for families.

Choose Interlaken if you want a small town of about 6,120 people, very little in the way of nightlife, and a drier, sharper summer peak in July.

Where they differ

Cologne carries the evenings, with many times as many bars, clubs and restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens. It is also the easier family trip: about three times as many attractions near the centre, far more park space, and 6 theme parks within reach where Interlaken has none. Protected land covers 53% of its surroundings against 19%.

Interlaken counters with drier air, three months at 40mm of rain or less where Cologne has none, and a summer peak that lands higher than Cologne's.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Cologne counts 40 beaches within reach and Interlaken 12, but neither has a month with water at 21°C or more.

Their weather years run close together: both peak in July, both cool sharply in winter, and neither has a mild off-season. Value sits nearer than the rest of the comparison too, though the daily budget behind each is a national estimate for Germany and Switzerland rather than a city measurement.

Which traveller are you?

The culture-first weekender should take Cologne: many times as many museums as Interlaken, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2, and a centre with far more notable places packed inside walking distance.

Families are better served in Cologne too, with about three times as many attractions near the centre, considerably more park space, and 6 theme parks within reach where Interlaken has none.

Anyone wanting a quiet, small base in high summer should pick Interlaken: a town of roughly 6,120 people, almost no nightlife or restaurant choice, and drier summer months at up to 24°C.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €248, are national price estimates for Germany and Switzerland, not measurements of either city. A single heavily visited town can sit far from its country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so treat them as background and price your own trip locally.

No weather station near Interlaken records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and its monthly ratings rest on temperature and rainfall alone: one side of the weather comparison is unmeasured. The beach counts flatter both, since 40 beaches near Cologne still come with water that never reaches 21°C.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cologne: 1991-2020 normals, Köln-Stammheim (5.4 km from centre). Interlaken: 2005-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Meiringen / Unterbach (19.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Cologne holds the longer usable season, May to September, with highs of 20-25°C. Its catch is that midsummer is also its wettest stretch, close to 81mm in both July and August, so the warm days come with more rain than Interlaken's.

Interlaken's window is narrower and sharper: June to August at 22-24°C, and drier through those months. September stays useful at 18°C with 38mm, and its shoulder months run drier than Cologne's right through the year.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
