The verdict

Choose Cologne if you want the fuller city: more places to eat and drink near the centre, more to walk to, and more green space and day-trip options around it, including 6 theme parks within reach.

Choose Nuremberg if you want a smaller city with drier spring months and a short list of sights close together, and you are not travelling for the nightlife.

Where they differ

Cologne has more countryside to work with: 53% of the land around it is protected against 42% around Nuremberg, and about three times as much park space near the centre. It also has roughly twice as many places to drink and three times as many nightclubs, plus 6 theme parks within reach against Nuremberg's 2.

Nuremberg counters with somewhat more tourist attractions near its centre, and a drier year: it has 4 months at 40mm of rain or less, where Cologne has none.

Where they are alike

Their years run in step: both peak at 25°C in July, both are at their coldest in January, and both improve and fade at the same times, so the choice between them is not a weather choice.

Neither is a place to swim, with no month bringing sea at 21°C or more. Both also sit at the same national price level, which describes the country rather than either city, so budget will not separate them either.

Which traveller are you?

If you are going out at night, Cologne is the clear pick: about twice as many places to drink and three times as many nightclubs, and in both cities most of them sit near the centre.

Families get more from Cologne too, with 6 theme parks within reach against 2 and roughly three times as much park space near the centre, though Nuremberg keeps more attractions close in.

Anyone after a compact short break in spring may prefer Nuremberg: a smaller city of 530,000, more sunshine over the year, drier March and April, and a shorter list of sights within walking distance.

What the numbers don't tell you

Both cities carry the same value figure, because it is a national price level rather than a measurement of either place. It tells you nothing about which of the two is cheaper, and the €163 daily budget beside it is one national estimate, not a trait of Cologne or Nuremberg.

Cologne's 40 nearby beaches do not add up to a swimming trip: neither city has a month with sea at 21°C or more. And Cologne's best-rated months are also its wettest, at 81mm in high summer, so a strong month here does not mean a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cologne: 1991-2020 normals, Köln-Stammheim (5.4 km from centre). Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Cologne peaks in July and August at 25°C, which are also its wettest months at 81mm. It is the milder option at the year's edges, with January highs of 6°C against 4°C, and late autumn holds up marginally better before both cities close down for winter.

Nuremberg is the stronger summer pick, similarly warm but drier through those months. Spring is its clearest advantage, with 33-39mm in March and April, though highs then reach only 10-15°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
