Where they differ

Como's advantage is the land around it: 23% of it is protected against 15% around Marseille, and there are 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach where Marseille has 1.

Marseille is the stronger city on the ground. It has 64 beaches nearby against Como's 8, with sea warm enough to swim in late summer, many times as many restaurants and a much wider range of kitchens, more places to drink and clubs, and 4 theme parks within reach where Como has none.

Where they are alike

Nature and day trips are where they sit closest. Both reward getting out of town: 23% of the land around Como is protected against 15% around Marseille, and both have parkland near the centre, Marseille more of it.

Museums and heritage are close too, in different forms: Marseille holds more museums, Como more UNESCO-listed sites within day-trip reach. The national daily budget estimates behind them are also similar, €155 for Como's country against €160 for Marseille's.

Which traveller are you?

Families are better served in Marseille: more attractions and park space near the centre, 4 theme parks within reach where Como has none, and 64 beaches for the days nobody wants a museum.

Anyone travelling to eat and go out should also pick Marseille. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre as Como and a much wider range of kitchens, plus more bars and clubs.

Walkers and day-trippers lean to Como: 23% of the surrounding land is protected, and 8 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach, though the town itself has far fewer notable places within walking distance.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 and €160, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels in each country, not measurements of Como or Marseille. A lake town and a large port city can each sit away from their own national average, by more than the gap between them, so neither number tells you what a trip will cost.

Marseille's beach strength and Como's best months both hide something. The sea there passes 21°C only at the height of summer, so a long list of beaches in spring means walks, not swims; and Como's strongest months are also among its wettest, near 158mm, warm days with rain in them.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Marseille: 1991-2020 normals, Marseille / Marignane (20.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como is at its best in July and August, with highs of 27°C. Rain is the catch: even then it sits near 158mm, and no month here is properly dry, so showers can interrupt any lake trip.

Marseille's window is wider. May and June bring highs of 24-28°C with little rain, which makes them the easiest months for walking the city. Midsummer is drier still, at 11mm, and hotter, at 31°C, with the sea at 22°C by August. Autumn brings the rain back, near 82mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
