The verdict

Choose Como if you want water and hills rather than a city: the land around it is largely protected, and it has more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach than Naples does.

Choose Naples if you want a dense centre you can cross on foot, with museums, places to eat and somewhere to drink at night, plus 29 beaches and a sea warm enough to swim from June onwards.

Where they differ

Como's advantage is the land around it: 23% protected against 7% near Naples, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 5. It is the choice for walking out of town rather than into it.

Naples concentrates far more into its centre: many times as many notable places within walking distance, many times as many restaurants, bars and clubs, and many more museums. It has 29 beaches nearby against Como's 8, and 5 months when the sea sits at 21°C or more.

Where they are alike

Day trips are where the two stand closest. Como leans on protected countryside, 23% of the land around it; Naples has more park space near its centre. Different in character, comparable in what a free day gives you.

They are also not far apart on climate and on eating. Both have warm summers and January as the coolest month, and although Naples has many more restaurants near its centre, the range of kitchens is similar.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children, Naples is the clearer choice: more attractions and more park space near the centre, 3 theme parks within reach where Como has none, and beaches to fall back on when the museums run out.

For museums and city walking, Naples again: many more museums, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, so days need less planning and less transport.

For quiet days outdoors, Como: 23% of the land around it is protected and 8 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach, and evenings are far quieter than in Naples.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level and is identical for both by construction, so the comparison between these two cities carries no information about which costs less on the ground. The €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either place.

Naples's beach strength rests on high summer, which is also when heat peaks at 31°C and the coast is at its busiest. Como's warmest months are among its wettest, at around 158-172mm, so a strong summer month there is not a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Naples: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (28.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como is at its best in high summer, when highs reach 27°C, though the rain does not let up, at around 158mm in those months. Winter days at 7-9°C give little reason to go.

Naples has the longer season. May and June bring 24-28°C with the rain thinning, July and August are near dry at 17-18mm with the sea at 25-26°C, and the water stays warm enough to swim into autumn, which Como cannot match at any point in the year.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
