The verdict

Choose Como if you want a walkable centre with plenty to see on foot, museums and a wide choice of day trips, including 8 UNESCO-listed places within reach.

Choose Rovinj if swimming decides it: a long run of beaches and a sea warm enough to use from June to September, in a small town rather than a lake city.

Where they differ

Como's advantage is on land. Its centre holds many times more notable places within walking distance, and it has about twice as many museums as Rovinj, plus 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1. Around it, 23% of the land is protected against 2%, with about twice as much park space near the centre.

Rovinj is the swimming trip: 55 beaches nearby against Como's 8, and four months with the sea at 21°C or more, where Como has no sea at all.

Where they are alike

Eating out is where the two sit closest, and neither is a large restaurant town. Como has about twice as many restaurants near the centre; Rovinj answers with a wider range of kitchens.

Families find much the same number of attractions near either centre, with Como stronger on park space and Rovinj holding 3 theme parks within reach. Year-round weather is close as well, 7-27°C in Como against 9-29°C in Rovinj, and neither gets a month down at 40mm.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers and beach-led families: Rovinj, clearly. 55 beaches nearby and a sea at 25-26°C in high summer make the water the plan, and three theme parks sit within reach for children.

Museum-goers and walkers who want the day to start at the door: Como. Its centre carries many times more notable places within walking distance, about twice the museums, and 8 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Walkers and day-trippers heading out of town: Como again, with 23% of the surrounding land protected and more park space near the centre. Rovinj suits anyone wanting late nights out, having many more nightclubs.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 and €138, are national estimates for the two countries, the price level for restaurants and hotels rather than a measurement of either town. Either place can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so treat them as background.

Rovinj's beach strength rests on four months of warm sea, and the town has about 13,000 residents, so the season concentrates on a small place, and the beach count says nothing about how busy they get. Como's warmest months are also among its wettest, so its best weather window is not a dry one.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Como: 1991-2020 normals, Lugano (23 km from centre). Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Como's best run is June to August, highs of 25-27°C, but those are also its wettest months, at 158-172mm each. May and September are gentler at 21-22°C and no drier; January to March are the driest, at 61-76mm.

Rovinj's window is longer. July and August bring 29°C with sea at 25-26°C and only 61-78mm of rain, and September still holds 24°C air over 23°C water. October stays swimmable, though rain climbs to 113mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
